The Broken Arrow Skyrace 23k, scheduled for June 22, 2025, at 9 a.m. PDT in Olympic Valley, California, marks the sixth event in the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) Mountain Running World Cup and is also the fifth stop on the Golden Trail World Series (GTWS). This year, the race promises a thrilling mix of international competitors from both series and elite local talents, creating an exciting atmosphere for spectators and participants alike.

Spanning 21.7 kilometers (approximately 13.5 miles), the race will present a significant challenge with an elevation gain of 1,433 meters (about 4,700 feet). Runners will navigate the stunning peaks and ridges surrounding Olympic Valley, providing a breathtaking backdrop to this highly-anticipated event. The Broken Arrow Skyrace culminates a three-day festival of competition, featuring nine races, including a vertical kilometer race known as “the Ascent,” which is an official component of the Mountain Running World Cup.

The 2025 Mountain Running World Cup series is composed of 13 exciting races, leading up to a two-race final. The series kicks off with the Zmeu X-Fest, followed by challenging races like the Vertical Nasego and Trofeo Nasego in May. Other notable events in this prestigious series include the Giir di Mont and Sierre-Zinal races. The Mountain Running World Cup uniquely combines uphill-only events with mixed uphill and downhill formats, attracting some of the globe’s finest mountain runners tackling rugged terrains.

As part of the extensive nine-race GTWS, the Broken Arrow 23k adds further prestige to an already renowned series, which showcases several iconic races. The GTWS commenced in February 2025 with the Kobe Trail 21k and will conclude in Italy’s scenic Ledro Valley in October during its finals. The series emphasizes relatively short yet technically demanding courses, making each race a formidable test of skill and endurance.

In the lead-up to the 2025 Broken Arrow Skyrace 23k, key runners have emerged as favorites in both the men’s and women’s events. Philemon Kiriago from Kenya and Sara Alonso from Spain are leading their respective GTWS categories, while Joyce Muthoni Njeru and Patrick Kipngeno, both from Kenya, currently top the Mountain Running World Cup standings. The competition will showcase elite athletes eager to defend their titles and assert their dominance.

Top Contenders of the Men’s Field

Patrick Kipngeno, the reigning Broken Arrow 23k champion, is set to defend his title in 2025. Having performed remarkably in the 2024 season and securing notable victories, Kipngeno currently leads the Mountain Running World Cup standings. He aims to leverage his experience and training to achieve another victory in Olympic Valley.

Philemon Kiriago, another Kenyan superstar, secured third in last year’s Mountain Running World Cup. After several strong performances, including a victory at the 2025 Trofeo Nasego, Kiriago comes into this season with confidence and a growing reputation.

Elhousine Elazzaoui from Morocco is another noteworthy contender, with a recent win at the Zegama Marathon setting the stage for his participation at Broken Arrow. His resilience and competitive history within the GTWS make him a serious threat for the podium in June.

Rémi Bonnet from Switzerland boasts a rich history within the GTWS, having secured multiple wins over recent years. While he faced an unexpected finish at the Golfo dell’Isola Trail earlier this year, his past performances indicate he has the determination and skill to perform well at the 2025 Broken Arrow Skyrace.

Top Contenders of the Women’s Field

Joyce Muthoni Njeru, the defending champion of the Broken Arrow Skyrace 23k, will attempt to reclaim her position at the top. Njeru brings a wealth of experience and proved her capability by securing a podium finish in the recent Mountain Running World Cup races. Her adaptability on technical trails will be an asset as she navigates the challenging course.

Mădălina Florea from Romania is poised for a strong performance as well, having secured podium finishes in the past two years at Broken Arrow. With a win at the Il Golfo dell’Isola Trail in May, she has shown remarkable form leading into this event.

Allie McLaughlin has a proven record in the Broken Arrow Skyrace, having participated in various race formats and securing solid results. Her extensive experience on this course, coupled with her prior achievements, positions her as a formidable contender for this year’s race.

Jade Belzberg, who placed second in the previous year’s 27k event, is also in attendance and has begun the season strongly with multiple wins. Her familiarity with the terrain and recent form make her a potential threat for the podium.

Conclusion

The anticipated Broken Arrow Skyrace 23k promises to be one of the most thrilling mountain running events in 2025, featuring a rich lineup of elite talent competing in one of the sport’s premier settings. As athletes prepare to tackle the demanding climbs and descents of Olympic Valley, the stage is set for a compelling competition. Fans and enthusiasts alike can expect to witness not only incredible athletic prowess but also the inherent spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship that defines mountain running.
