The 130th Boston Marathon has once again captured the attention of the global running community with an overwhelming response during its recent registration period. The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) reported an impressive tally of 33,267 qualifier applications submitted between September 8 and September 12, 2025, setting the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating event on April 20, 2026.

The Surge of Applications

For the upcoming marathon, athletes from an astounding 116 countries and all 50 U.S. states participated in the application process. This year’s interest marks a notable increase in enthusiasm, reflecting the Boston Marathon’s esteemed reputation as one of the premier events in the race calendar. Jack Fleming, President and CEO of the B.A.A., expressed enthusiasm about the turnout, stating, “Year after year, the running community looks forward to April’s Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America with anticipation and excitement.”

Application Acceptance Process

While the response has been encouraging, the B.A.A. has made it clear that due to field size limitations, not all applicants will be able to compete in the 130th Boston Marathon. In the following weeks, all applications will undergo a thorough verification process to determine which qualifiers will receive acceptance notifications by early October. In comparison, the 2025 Boston Marathon accepted 24,069 qualified applicants, meaning that a notable number of hopefuls may not receive the good news this time around.

The organization has refrained from predicting the “cut-off” time for acceptance into the marathon, urging athletes to refrain from inquiring about their application statuses unless explicitly requested by the Athlete Services team. To keep everyone informed, additional updates will be shared via the B.A.A.’s official website, www.baa.org, and its social media channels.

A Look at the History of Qualifying Standards

Since 1970, the Boston Marathon has implemented qualifying standards as a means of entry to this historic race. For those curious about the evolving criteria, a comprehensive historical breakdown of qualifying times is available [here](https://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/qualify/history-qualifying-times).

Future Boston Marathons

The qualifying window for the 131st Boston Marathon, scheduled for April 19, 2027, has already opened on September 13, 2025, and will run until the end of the registration week in September 2026. The specifics regarding registration dates and entry procedures will be disclosed after the conclusion of the 130th Boston Marathon.

The Role of the Boston Athletic Association

Founded in 1887, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) serves as a non-profit entity dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle through sports, particularly running. The B.A.A. is not only responsible for managing the Boston Marathon but also supports various charity initiatives, youth programs, and year-round sporting events. Reflecting the significant impact of the race, the 2024 Boston Marathon brought about $509 million in economic activity in both state and local sectors, showcasing the marathon’s extensive community influence.

The Boston Marathon is a proud member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, which includes other prestigious international races held in cities like Tokyo, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago, and New York City. The collaboration reflects the marathon’s universal appeal as athletes from all walks of life prepare to chase their dreams along the iconic Boylston Street in Boston.

Frequently Asked Questions for Athletes

As the event draws near, many athletes may have questions regarding the process. Here are some frequently asked questions:

When will official notices of acceptances and non-acceptances be emailed?

Notices regarding acceptances or non-acceptances will be issued by early October.

When will credit cards be charged?

Will registration for the 130th Boston Marathon re-open to qualifiers?

No, registration for the 130th Boston Marathon was available only from September 8-12 and will not re-open.

When does registration for the 131st Boston Marathon open?
