In the world of endurance sports, ultra marathons stand out for their grueling challenges and captivating allure. One event that particularly captures the imagination is the Spine Race. A testament to human endurance, these races attract seasoned runners seeking a unique thrill. Kendra Wedgwood, a prominent figure in ultra marathon running, is prepping for the 2024 Spine Race and brings with her a wealth of experience from various demanding events. Her journey from unexpectedly clinching victory in the women’s category at the Spine Challenger South to tackling the notorious Tunnel Race—a 200-mile ultra in total darkness—illustrates her commitment and resilience.

A Mindset Shift: From Tarmac to Trails

For those transitioning from road running to ultra trail marathons, Kendra emphasizes the importance of a mental adjustment. “Focus on enjoying the moment rather than fixating on finish times,” she advises. Unlike road races, where timing can be a primary measure of success, trail running is more about the experience itself. Kendra remarks that many ultra runners, particularly women, celebrate each other’s accomplishments. “Trail running feels less competitive,” she notes, fostering a sense of community and shared achievement among participants.

Essential Gear Preparation for Ultra Marathons

A critical aspect of ultra marathon training is selecting the right gear. Kendra highlights that multi-day races require meticulous planning around equipment. Whether it’s thermal layers, emergency shelters, or cooking gear, the mandatory kit list can be extensive and specific. She encourages budding ultra runners to begin acquiring gear well in advance of an event. “Start the process a year out to experiment with what works best for you,” she suggests, ensuring that runners are well-prepared as the race day approaches.

The Importance of Training with Your Pack

Carrying a loaded pack can significantly change the dynamics of a run. To simulate race conditions, Kendra practiced long runs with her gear. “My coach organized a specific training weekend that focused on effective packing strategies, nutrition, and sleep management,” she explains. Familiarity with your kit will not only enhance comfort but also efficiency, particularly when conditions become challenging. Being able to access necessary items without clutter can make all the difference when facing inclement weather or navigating in darkness.

Balancing Pack Weight and Gear Essentials

When considering what to carry, ultra runners must weigh the benefits of a lighter pack against the necessity of additional gear. Kendra opts to carry extra layers and a backup headlamp, aware that certain items are indispensable during tough conditions. “Having a heavier pack for extra security is preferable for me,” she states, especially when focusing on completing the race rather than competing for the win. This approach is particularly vital for first-time ultra marathon runners, allowing them to prioritize finishing over speed.

Preparing for Sleep Deprivation During Races

One often-overlooked aspect of ultra marathons is the impact of sleep deprivation. For races like the Winter Spine, participants may find themselves running through the night, often at the expense of restorative rest. “Through experience, I’ve learned how to navigate sleep deprivation,” Kendra admits, recounting her experience at the Spine Challenger. She encourages training that includes long runs at night to acclimate to the challenges presented by limited sleep and navigating during darkness.

Building Mental Strength for Endurance Challenges

Finally, the psychological element of ultra running cannot be overstated. Kendra underscores the necessity of mental toughness in overcoming the hurdles encountered during competition. She advises that endurance athletes cultivate resilience through diverse training experiences, adapting mentally to whatever difficulties may arise. Kendra’s ultimate encouragement is to “remember that the pain is temporary; the satisfaction of completing a challenge can create lasting joy.” Maintaining this perspective can be transformative in a sport that tests both mind and body.

For those inspired to embrace ultra marathons, Kendra’s insights provide invaluable guidance. Comprehensive preparedness, both mentally and physically, is essential for overcoming the immense challenges these events present.
