Running Community Gathers for the Great New York State Marathon

On a crisp Sunday morning, the scenic track surrounding Onondaga Lake came alive with the vibrant energy of determined runners crossing the finish line. With arms raised high and smiles beaming, participants celebrated their accomplishments as friends and family cheered them on from the sidelines, many holding handmade signs adorned with glittery messages of support.

A Celebration of Local Beauty

“It’s a good opportunity for people to get outside and enjoy the beautiful area that we have,” remarked Olivia Bird, a participant in the half-marathon. Having lived in Syracuse her entire life, Bird expressed her enthusiasm for running around a cherished local landmark for the first time. The event featured the Great New York State Marathon, which commenced and concluded at the Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview. Runners enjoyed a hilly course enveloped by the brilliant hues of fall foliage. The weekend’s festivities included 5K and 10K runs on Saturday, culminating with full and half-marathons on Sunday.

Encouragement Across All Levels

The atmosphere was electric as runners of various ages and abilities crossed the finish line. An enthusiastic announcer motivated each participant, celebrating milestones and even recognizing a runner’s birthday. Bird, currently attending the University of Buffalo for dentistry, approached the marathon as a chance to stay active and connect with her roots during her time back home. Having embraced marathon culture during her undergraduate years in Boston, she has maintained her running routine.

Preparing for the Challenge

To rigorously prepare for the marathon, Bird dedicated herself to running every Sunday, aiming for a specific weekly mileage. Despite training on flat terrain, she found the hilly course around Onondaga Lake challenging. “I wasn’t really prepared for the hills,” she admitted, but the support from her family and the favorable weather conditions buoyed her spirits as she powered through. Additionally, she captured moments of accomplishment post-race alongside banners highlighting various marathon categories.

Overcoming Personal Obstacles

Other participants, like Ron Spain, faced their own unique challenges. A veteran of the marathon, Spain returned for his third year after recovering from a hamstring injury. Despite the setback, he managed to complete the half-marathon, which was his second this year. Spain shared his journey, stating, “I worked pretty hard to try and come back from it, and it looks like I’m almost there, so I feel pretty good.” His determination to push past muscle soreness and gradually increase his training distance highlights the resilience that marathons cultivate among participants.

Draw of the Fall Season

Runners came from near and far to partake in the event, drawn by the allure of Syracuse’s fall weather. Hannah Rubeck traveled an hour from Clinton, NY, eager to experience the season’s cool temperatures. “It’s always hard when it starts out really cold and then gets a lot warmer while you’re running,” she noted, highlighting the unpredictability of weather during marathons. The camaraderie felt by all participants created a strong sense of community, as attendees supported one another in their athletic endeavors.

Community Spirit and Health Benefits

Beyond the personal achievements of runners, the marathon fostered a feeling of togetherness in the community. Diana Bird Marsalis, Olivia’s mother, expressed her joy in supporting her daughter at the finish line, emphasizing the importance of such events for both physical and mental well-being. “You’re all just out there doing a hard thing,” Rubeck said, reflecting on how the shared experience of running fosters a collective strength and determination. This year’s Great New York State Marathon not only showcased athletic prowess but also reinforced the invaluable connections that arise from a shared passion for health and fitness.
