Spencer Matthews’ Epic Challenge: 30 Marathons in 30 Days

Spencer Matthews, known from Made in Chelsea, has undergone a remarkable transformation—not just physically, with a new chiselled six-pack, but also mentally. At 36 years old, the entrepreneur has taken on and conquered The Great Desert Challenge in Jordan, running 30 marathons over the course of 30 days. This incredible feat has earned him a spot in the Guinness World Records and reflects a substantial shift in his outlook on life.

The Challenge: Running on Sand

Completing a staggering 1,274.02 kilometers across some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world, Matthews faced both physical and mental challenges that pushed him to his limits. Speaking after his return to London, he shared insights into his training regimen and the dietary adjustments he made to fuel such an arduous undertaking.

Fueling the Challenge: Matthews’ Diet in the Desert

While accustomed to a range of culinary comforts, Matthews adapted his diet significantly during the challenge. With the help of a local Bedouin chef, he consumed a diet mainly consisting of scrambled or boiled eggs paired with salty cheese and pitta bread for breakfast. “I tried to eat as much as I could in the morning because it made a massive difference in how I felt,” he explained.

Essential Hydration Strategies

Hydration was another critical element of Matthews’ preparations. Consuming a combination of water supplemented with salt tablets and strong coffee each day ensured he stayed hydrated. Moreover, advanced monitoring techniques were employed to track his internal body temperature throughout the runs, highlighting the meticulous planning involved in safeguarding his health.

Preparation and Training Regimen

In the lead-up to this extraordinary undertaking, Matthews logged nearly 2,000 kilometers of training. He typically ran between 100-120 km weekly, culminating in weeks where his mileage topped 160 km. To simulate desert conditions, he spent 12 hours in a heat chamber, a crucial element of his preparation that helped his body acclimatize to extreme temperatures.

The Mental Aspect: Motivation and Support

The motivation behind undertaking such a daunting challenge stemmed from a personal loss. Matthews dedicated the challenge to his brother Michael, who tragically passed away in 1999 during an Everest ascent. Reflecting on this, he noted, “I think he’d be very proud.” His accomplishment not only marked a personal victory but also served as a means to support small charities benefiting children dealing with grief and emotional hardships.

Impact and Future Endeavors

The successful completion of The Great Desert Challenge has not only elevated Matthews’ status beyond a reality TV star but has also generated significant funds—over £520,000—aimed at assisting those in need. This fundraising effort offers a safety net for children lacking essential support during troubling times, demonstrating Matthews’ commitment to making a difference in the lives of others as he embarks on his next chapter.
