Introducing the New San Antonio Marathon: A Revitalized Running Experience

The vibrant city of San Antonio is set to host its inaugural marathon and half marathon on December 5-6, 2025, promising a unique blend of culture, history, and athleticism. This new event stems from the city’s decision to part ways with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series, paving the way for a locally-focused marathon that aims to showcase the rich traditions and communities of San Antonio.

A Fresh Start for San Antonio’s Running Community

After years of association with the Rock ‘n’ Roll series, which saw as many as 18,000 participants in its peak years, San Antonio’s leaders are confident that this new marathon will better embody the city’s spirit. Officials are enthusiastic about moving forward with a race that fosters local pride and highlights San Antonio’s signature features—its diverse neighborhoods, culinary delights, and deep-seated history.

Celebrating the Local Culture Through Every Mile

City officials plan to develop race routes that take runners through iconic landmarks and culturally rich areas, including the historic San Antonio River Walk and vibrant areas adorned with unique murals. This approach not only promises an engaging experience for participants but also serves to promote San Antonio as a prime running destination. “Our new routes will consist of themed miles that take you on a cultural journey through San Antonio’s iconic landmarks and neighborhoods,” noted Jenny Carnes, president and CEO of San Antonio Sports.

Industry Collaboration Shaping the Future

In collaboration with The Running Event (TRE)—North America’s largest running industry convention—the San Antonio Marathon will kick off with a series of associated activities, including a Friday night 5K race, a public expo, and live music performances, all preceding the main marathon event. With plans to establish a three-year partnership with TRE, San Antonio aims to cultivate a festival atmosphere that celebrates running and community involvement.

Championing Local Heroes in the Sport

Marathon ambassador Meb Keflezighi, a prominent figure in U.S. marathon history, emphasizes the communal aspects of running, stating, “Running is something that brings the community, families, and the city together.” His involvement not only promotes the event but also inspires local runners and connects them with a broader running community. Mayor Ron Nirenberg echoed this sentiment, hoping to position San Antonio as a destination marathon akin to New York and Boston.

Optimizing Local Involvement for Greater Impact

The decision to create this new marathon comes during a time when mid-sized cities are increasingly seeking to capitalize on sports tourism for economic growth. The local ownership of the San Antonio Marathon aims to keep the profits within the community and ensure that the event’s vision aligns with local interests. This strategy is expected to foster greater tourist engagement and community participation in running events.

Looking Ahead: The Future of San Antonio’s Running Events

As the San Antonio marathon prepares for its debut, the excitement surrounding local ownership and community involvement signals a promising future for running in the area. Lori Houston, San Antonio’s assistant city manager, emphasized the importance of showcasing the city as much more than just its famous Riverwalk, stating, “We have a chance to really make this a national and international running stage.” With careful planning and a focus on local culture, the San Antonio Marathon plans to leave a lasting legacy in the running community.
