Bank of America Chicago Marathon: Charity Fundraising Insights and Future Opportunities

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has emerged as not just a premier athletic event but also as a vital fundraising platform, generating substantial support for various charities. In 2024, the marathon achieved the highest fundraising total in its history, with participants raising an impressive $36 million. This marks a significant milestone as the cumulative funds raised through the event’s official Charity Program have now exceeded $358 million since its inception in 2002.

Participants in the marathon often align themselves with affiliated nonprofit organizations, committing to fundraising as part of their marathon journey. Aspiring runners hoping to take part in the sold-out 2025 event can secure their entry by joining an official charity team and pledging to raise funds for their chosen cause. This unique opportunity allows runners to contribute meaningfully while preparing for the race.

According to Carey Pinkowski, the Executive Race Director, the growth of the Charity Program reflects the dedication of thousands of participants committed to making a difference. “The funds raised by each runner allow the impact of the race to reach far beyond the finish line,” he notes, underlining a growing tradition of community support and charity fundraising that the marathon represents.

The Charity Program, which began with just 14 charities and 1,674 runners, has dramatically expanded over the years. For the upcoming 2025 event, 217 charities are expected to participate, with approximately 17,000 runners ready to take on the challenge of fundraising for meaningful causes. This growth exemplifies the marathon’s potential to help various organizations, whether local, national, or global.

One standout story from the 2024 marathon was that of Carl Allegretti, the President of Arbor Investments and a marathon veteran. For his 70th marathon, Allegretti not only completed the race but did so by breaking records in fundraising, accumulating a remarkable $277,491. This incredible feat exceeded the previous record by over $100,000 and showcases the impact that individuals can have when they combine personal milestones with philanthropy.

Allegretti’s fundraising efforts directly supported three key charities: the Greater Chicago Food Depository, PAWS Chicago, and Lurie Children’s Hospital, the latter holding special significance for him after his son’s cancer diagnosis and recovery. His journey from a first-time runner to a leading fundraiser emphasizes the profound connections between sports, personal journeys, and charitable giving.

As interest in the marathon continues to grow, individuals inspired by the achievements of runners like Allegretti can still secure their place in the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Participants who join an official charity team are required to raise a minimum of $2,100 to support their selected organizations. Detailed information about charity registration can be found at chicagomarathon.com/charity.

The 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon is set to take place on October 12, 2025, and promises to bring together thousands of runners from over 100 countries. With its iconic course spanning 29 neighborhoods, the marathon not only showcases the vibrant community of Chicago but also acts as a catalyst for fundraising, generating over $547 million in economic impact annually.
