MIAMI – This weekend, the Life Time Miami Marathon and Half Marathon will welcome thousands of runners from around the globe, showcasing the vibrant running culture of Miami.

The race kicks off at the Kaseya Center in Downtown Miami at 6 a.m. Sunday, promising an exhilarating day for both participants and spectators alike. The marathon features an exciting course that guides runners across the picturesque MacArthur Causeway to Miami Beach, traversing iconic locales such as Ocean Drive and Washington Avenue. After this scenic stretch, they will return toward downtown over the Venetian Causeway, eventually making their way south to Coconut Grove before reaching the finish line at Bayfront Park.

To ensure the safety of all participants, the course must be cleared by 2 p.m., emphasizing the need for runners to maintain their pace throughout the challenging route.

Expected Road Closures During the Event

As thousands of athletes take to the streets, road closures will be in effect to facilitate the marathon. Starting Friday at noon, Biscayne Boulevard will be closed to traffic between SE 3 Street and NE 2 Street, reopening briefly on Saturday before the race. On race day, significant traffic congestion is expected in Downtown Miami and Brickell until early afternoon, particularly near popular Miami Beach areas like Ocean Drive and Alton Road, until about 10 a.m. Coconut Grove will also see heavy traffic disruption during these hours. For easier access to Miami Beach, drivers are advised to use the Julia Tuttle Causeway from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Despite the inconvenience of road closures, local business advocates remain optimistic. “This is their time to shine. This is when everyone will enjoy the Downtown Miami cuisine and nightlife, offering an energy unique to our city,” stated Kim Hills, spokeswoman for the Miami Downtown Development Authority.

Transportation Options for Runners and Spectators

To facilitate transportation for participants, Brightline is providing early morning train service, allowing runners to travel from West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, or Aventura to MiamiCentral Station, arriving at 5:08 a.m. This highlights the convenience for runners, who can easily make their way to the starting line without the burden of traffic.

The Growth of the Miami Marathon

Since its inception in 2003 by co-founder Frankie Ruiz, the Miami Marathon has witnessed tremendous growth, evolving into a premier event within the running community. Originally starting with 3,400 participants, the race has surged to over 18,000 registrants, indicating a strong demand and recognition in the sports world. “We’ve transformed into a spectator event,” Ruiz shared, eagerly anticipating the vibrant atmosphere the event fosters.

International Participation and Competitor Highlights

This year’s marathon will feature competitors hailing from over 70 countries, reinforcing Miami’s status as a global race destination. The event not only includes a full marathon of 26.2 miles but also boasts half marathon and 5k competitions, making it accessible to runners of varying experience levels. CBS News Miami’s own Harry Cicma will be participating for the second consecutive year, aiming for his 11th career marathon medal and preparing for his upcoming challenge at the Tokyo Marathon.

Conclusion

The Life Time Miami Marathon and Half Marathon is not just a race; it’s a celebration of community, sport, and Miami’s vibrant culture. With the blend of local support, a scenic route, and international participation, this event is poised to be a remarkable showcase of athletic spirit this weekend.
