Participating in a marathon was never on my bucket list, but an impromptu trip to Orlando changed that. In October, I convinced two friends to join me for the runDisney Wine and Dine Half Marathon Event. What began as a spontaneous decision turned into an unforgettable experience that sparked my newfound love for running.

Understanding runDisney

runDisney is well-known in the running community for organizing various races throughout the year. Each race season, over 170,000 participants take part in events across multiple locations. With six race weekends hosted annually—four at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and two at Disneyland Resort in California—runDisney attracts a diverse crowd that enjoys not just racing but also the magical Disney experience. This year, I participated in a 5k event, joining many excited runners of all ages and abilities.

One of the most appealing aspects of runDisney events is the unique opportunity to run—or walk—through Disney parks before they open to the public. Participants can earn Disney-themed finisher medals, and the lively atmosphere, complete with entertainment and character interactions, makes for a fun outing whether you’re with friends, family, or flying solo. Despite my initial fears about stamina and cramps, I completed the race without issues, taking advantage of the relaxed pace that eased my anxiety about finishing.

The Experience of the Race

On the day of the race, we woke up around 3 am to catch the shuttle to the park, where we lined up based on staggered start times. The air was electric with excitement, and as we prepared to run, a vibrant array of contestants lined up alongside us. The atmosphere was further enlivened by a spectacular fireworks display that marked our group’s starting signal. Encouragement from cheerful spectators holding motivational signs dotted the course, boosting our spirits.

Throughout the race, participants were entertained by bands and cheerleaders, and there were even opportunities for photo ops with beloved Disney characters. The race combined spirited competition with an environment full of support, making it clear why so many return year after year. The finisher medal, bestowed upon crossing the finish line, was an added motivation and truly a cherished memento of the day. I also enjoyed watching other participants showcase their creativity by dressing up as various Disney characters, adding a whimsical element to the event.

Delicious Delights: The Wine and Dine Experience

The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly the Wine & Dine aspect of the event. Featuring beloved culinary Disney characters, the marathon intertwines running with food and wine, creating a delightful post-race experience. During this year’s race weekend, characters like the Swedish Chef and Princess Tiana added to the fun by engaging with runners during the event and making appearances at the after-party, where racers celebrated their achievements. Our race gear featured the charming Swedish Chef, making for a memorable keepsake from the event.

The excitement didn’t end with the race. After a day of running, participants gained access to the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival where they could sample international cuisine and beverages from around the globe. The festival not only smoothed the transition from race to fun but also embraced a spirit of culinary exploration.

Looking Ahead: The 2025 Wine and Dine Event

As I reflect on the weekend, I find myself eagerly anticipating next year’s event. Scheduled for October 23 to October 26, 2025, the Wine & Dine Half Marathon promises another round of captivating experiences. Registration opens on February 11, 2025, with VIP access for Club runDisney Gold and Platinum members starting on February 4. The 2025 marathon will embrace even more culinary themes—runners can expect a unique experience, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner-themed races alongside renowned Disney characters.

In summary, participating in a runDisney event has enriched my appreciation for running and provided me with a unique way to celebrate Disney magic. Whether you consider yourself a runner or not, I strongly recommend participating in a runDisney race. You may find, as I did, that you not only enjoy the run but also create lifelong memories.
