Hayden Hawks Prepares for a Winning Start at Tarawera Ultra-Trail

Hayden Hawks is gearing up for a significant year in ultrarunning, aiming to kick off with a strong performance at the 2025 Tarawera Ultra-Trail by UTMB. The event is set to commence on Saturday, February 15th, at 7 am local time in Rotorua, New Zealand, a region known for its stunning landscapes and exceptional trail running opportunities.

Building on Previous Success

This will be Hawks’ second participation in the Tarawera Ultra-Trail, having previously secured the runner-up position in the T102 race in 2023. His impressive track record also includes winning the highly regarded CCC race during the UTMB World Series Finals, along with a commendable third-place finish at the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run. These achievements underscore his status as a standout competitor on the men’s side as he takes to the trails once again.

A Focused Training Regimen in New Zealand

Hawks has spent nearly six weeks training in New Zealand alongside close friend and fellow runner, Dan Jones. “This is our second significant training block here, and it’s quickly becoming a second home for us,” Hawks shared. He appreciates the opportunity to escape the winter chill back home while enjoying the outdoor activities that New Zealand has to offer, such as diving and fishing. He emphasizes the benefits of both the training conditions and the supportive community that surrounds the event.

A Strategic Approach to Early Season Racing

With an ambitious schedule ahead, including both Western States and UTMB World Series Finals this year, Hawks decided to race in the T50 primarily to test his speed and fitness early in the season. He aims to avoid excessive long-distance running too soon while also treating the T50 as an integral part of his training regimen. “I always want to win, but most importantly, I’m focused on executing a well-paced and injury-free race,” he stated, highlighting his experience and tactical approach to ultramarathons.

Strong Competition Awaits

Hawks is set to face strong international contenders, including two-time OCC podium finisher Robbie Simpson from Great Britain, Spanish athletes Daniel Osanz and Marc Olle Bernades, and two-time T102 champion Dylan Bowman from the USA. Additionally, local favorite Michael Voss is expected to present formidable competition in the quest for the T50 crown.

Highlighting the Women’s T50 Race

The women’s T50 race features prominent competitor Bianca Tarboton from South Africa, renowned for her numerous victories at the Ultra-Trail Cape Town and consistent podium finishes worldwide. She will encounter a competitive field that includes Australians Patricia McKibbin, Georgina Campbell, and Madison Reynolds, along with American Corrine Malcom and Kiwi Mel Aitken.

A Bucket List Experience for Runners

McKibbin, who is making her Tarawera Ultra-Trail debut, expressed her excitement about participating in a race that has been on her bucket list for years. “I have heard the New Zealand trail running community is special,” she mentioned, looking forward to competing on different terrain and challenging herself early in the season. As an athlete focused on improving her speed, she is eager to embrace the race atmosphere and perform well, regardless of recent health setbacks.

Impact on Future Competitions

The Tarawera Ultra-Trail serves as the second event within the UTMB World Series for 2025. Notably, the top three male and female finishers across the TMiler, T102, and T50 races will earn direct qualifications for the 2026 UTMB World Series Finals in Chamonix, France, making this competition vital for aspiring ultrarunners. As Hayden Hawks and other elite athletes approach the starting line, all eyes will be on their performances, defining the beginning of what promises to be an exhilarating ultrarunning season.
