Iowa State Dance Marathon Raises Over $145,000 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

The annual Iowa State Dance Marathon culminated in a spectacular Big Event held at the Memorial Union Great Hall on Saturday, successfully raising $145,162.28 to support the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. This year’s event is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of numerous committees and volunteers who have been planning for months to bring this noteworthy occasion to life.

Participants at the Big Event experienced a variety of engaging activities designed to entertain and inspire, including a silent disco, a hypnotist show, and a morale dance every hour. In addition to these fun activities, families of children impacted by the Dance Marathon took the stage to share their heartfelt stories, creating an emotional atmosphere throughout the event.

“Bring your tissues and hope you’re not wearing mascara because I cry every time,” shared Addy Wenzl, a sophomore studying genetics and a member of the event’s creative committee. The event is designed not only to raise funds but also to honor the resilience of children and families who have faced significant health challenges.

Among the many highlights was a children’s talent show and the poignant Angel Kiddo room and ceremony, recognizing the Dance Marathon children who have tragically passed away. Such moments are integral to the event, allowing participants to reflect on the impact of the cause and the importance of community support.

To maximize fundraising efforts, participants were divided into four Miracle Maker teams, each dedicated to raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network. Throughout the year, team members convene to strategize their fundraising initiatives, often hearing firsthand accounts from families whose lives have been directly affected by the program. “Whenever they talk, it’s incredibly humbling,” noted Kassidy Brown, a sophomore studying apparel merchandising and design. “You don’t fully understand the impact until you’re there.”

The sense of community was palpable, as participants gathered to celebrate the children and ensure they felt valued and special. For Wenzl, the event is about “ensuring they can kind of forget about everything they’re going through and just feel loved and celebrated.” This sentiment resonates with many attendees and reinforces the mission behind the Dance Marathon: to create joyful experiences for families facing hardships.

Months of planning went into making the Big Event a success, with committee members diligently booking vendors and organizing timelines. “On the day of the event, we just focus on ensuring everything runs smoothly and enjoying the experiences that unfold,” explained Allison Eekhoff, a sophomore studying event management. Eekhoff highlighted the importance of creating a joyous atmosphere for children and their families, encapsulating the spirit of the Dance Marathon.

Ultimately, the Iowa State Dance Marathon serves as a critical platform for community engagement and charitable efforts. “It’s a time for everyone to come together, making a difference so kids can simply be kids,” Brown remarked. This collaborative spirit not only supports families but also fosters empathy and understanding among volunteers and attendees—qualities that are vital for community solidarity.

Every effort counts in the fight to improve the lives of children and families in need.
