Introducing Running Concierges: A Unique Hotel Offering

With the rise of wellness tourism and the demand for personalized experiences, hotels are reimagining traditional concierge services. One innovative addition is the concept of running concierges, designed to provide guests with local running routes and foster community through shared experiences. For avid runners or those simply looking for a way to stay active while traveling, these specialized concierges facilitate group runs and offer insights into hidden gems around the city.

Bridging the Gap Between Hospitality and Fitness

On a winter morning in Boston, a running concierge named Natalie Fiorello led a group through scenic Back Bay and along the Charles River. Her role showcases how modern concierges are evolving from providing traditional hospitality services to offering fitness experiences. The origins of the concierge profession date back to medieval Europe, with roots in hospitality that have now expanded into diverse realms, including health and wellness.

A Brief History of Running Concierges

The journey of running concierges began in 2008 when Paul Dwyer, a Westin employee, was asked by his hotel manager if he could run. This simple question led to the launch of group runs, which quickly became popular among guests. The success of this pilot program prompted The Westin to expand the initiative, leading to the appointment of Chris Heuisler as the first dedicated running concierge in 2013. Over time, the concept spread globally, with more hotels recognizing the value of promoting wellness through guided running experiences.

Running Concierges: Enhancing Guest Experience

For hotels, employing a running concierge is a strategic decision that caters to the increasing demand for fitness-oriented travel experiences. As many travelers prioritize wellness, having a dedicated expert to lead runs provides a unique selling point. Concierges not only map out safe routes but also create opportunities for guests to engage with the local community. This unique amenity allows visitors to explore their surroundings while connecting with others who share similar interests.

The Social Impact of Running Together

The social aspect of running cannot be overstated. Many guests who participate in group runs report feelings of belonging and connection. For example, Albert Flores, a novice runner, found the community fostered by running concierges inspired him to undertake numerous 5Ks and half marathons. This highlights the importance of human interaction in enhancing the travel experience and combating feelings of loneliness while on the road, which has become increasingly relevant in today’s society.

Expanding Wellness Offerings in Hospitality

As more hotels adopt wellness initiatives, running concierges are among the top amenities being introduced. According to hospitality expert Sarah Dandashy, there has been a noticeable shift toward offering experiences that promote holistic well-being. Running is not just about physical fitness; it also serves as a mental health booster and a tool for fostering connections among guests. By prioritizing wellness, hotels differentiate themselves in a competitive market while catering to the needs of modern travelers.

Conclusion: Running Concierges are Here to Stay

The role of running concierges in hotels is set to continue expanding as traveler preferences evolve. By providing a unique and inviting way to stay active and connected, hotels can significantly enhance their guests’ experience. Whether staying in a bustling city or a quiet retreat, the presence of a running concierge ensures that wellness and community engagement are easily accessible. With this amenity, hotels not only promote physical activity but also the invaluable experience of exploring a new city on foot, making travel even more enriching.
