Des Linden is not just another marathon runner; she is a trailblazer in the world of long-distance running. In 2018, she secured her place in history by becoming the first American woman in over three decades to win the prestigious Boston Marathon. Battling through harsh weather conditions, she completed the race in an impressive 2:39:54. Furthermore, her achievements didn’t stop there; in 2021, she shattered the world record for a 50K race, finishing in just 2:59:54, averaging an astounding 5:47 per mile. Linden’s dedication goes beyond just running; she emphasizes the importance of nutrition in maintaining her health and performance.

Fueling Performance: The Role of Nutrition

Linden, now 39, is a two-time Olympic marathon competitor and has achieved nine top-5 finishes at World Marathon Majors. Currently training in northern Michigan, she adopts a philosophy that underscores the significance of nutrition in her training regimen. “Good nutrition plays a big role in keeping my body strong and healthy—allowing me to put in the work without setbacks,” she states, highlighting her commitment to understanding the relationship between diet and athletic performance.

1. Prioritize Caloric Intake

Linden’s approach to nutrition is straightforward yet effective. She emphasizes the importance of consuming enough calories to fuel her body adequately. “The wrong fuel is better than being under-fueled,” she notes. This hasn’t led her to indulge in unhealthy fast foods; rather, she focuses on whole foods that are nutrient-dense. Fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and unprocessed grains are staples in her diet. By sourcing groceries from local farmers’ markets, she ensures her meals are as fresh and wholesome as possible.

2. Personalized Nutrition with Biomarkers

Since 2020, Linden has utilized InsideTracker, a personalized nutrition platform that combines blood biomarker data with fitness insights to optimize her health. “Having data and numbers to track has let me dial in my nutrition game plan,” she explains. Regular blood tests allow her to assess her vitamin levels, glucose levels, and other essential biomarkers, helping her identify any deficiencies and make necessary adjustments to her diet.

3. Recovery Nutrition: A Key to Success

Nutrition for recovery plays a pivotal role in Linden’s training. “It’s critical for making the hard work as valuable as possible and helping my body adapt,” she shares. After intense workouts, she fuels her recovery with a protein-rich shake that also includes quick-digesting carbohydrates. This approach not only aids in muscle repair but restores her energy levels efficiently. Linden’s strategy emphasizes the need for continuous nutrition every few hours to maintain performance and minimize fatigue.

4. Fine-Tuning Pre-Run Fuel

Getting the right pre-run nutrition is essential for optimal performance. Linden experiments with various food options to determine what works best for her. She prefers bland, simple foods on the day of major workouts or races. Common choices include a bagel with peanut butter or a bowl of white rice, accompanied by her specially brewed Linden X Two coffee for an extra energy boost.

5. Long-term Tracking for Continuous Improvement

Linden understands that achieving peak performance is a long-term endeavor. “Optimizing health isn’t an instant fix,” she says. By consistently tracking her biomarkers through InsideTracker, she can monitor her progress and ensure that necessary adjustments are made to her nutrition plan. “Know your data and ensure you’re executing on what your body needs continually,” Linden advises, underscoring the importance of data-informed decisions in athletic performance.

Looking Ahead: A Lifelong Commitment to Running

Des Linden’s relentless pursuit of excellence in running is matched by her commitment to smart nutrition. “I’m excited for a few more years of racing on the roads and I definitely see myself as a lifelong runner,” she states. With the right nutrition, ongoing biomarker tracking, and a focus on holistic health, Linden is well-prepared to continue her racing career for years to come. For athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike, her story serves as a powerful reminder of how diligent attention to diet and health can produce outstanding results in competitive sports.
