Celebrating a Decade: The 10th Annual Erlanger Chattanooga Marathon

This weekend, the city of Chattanooga is set to host the 10th annual Erlanger Chattanooga Marathon, a significant milestone that promises not only excitement but also a boost to the local economy. The event has evolved over the past decade, and this year’s celebration includes the introduction of a 10k race, a beer garden, numerous expo vendors, and exclusive merchandise commemorating this momentous anniversary.

A Milestone in the Running Community

Race Director Brian Myrick reflected on the journey of the marathon, stating, “When we started this 10 years ago, I don’t know that we had a clue where we would end up.” The 10th anniversary serves as a reminder of the accomplishments made within the local running community and highlights the growth of the event as it continues to attract interest from participants far and wide.

Economic Impact of the Marathon

This year, approximately 3,000 participants are expected to take part in the races, drawing runners from various regions. Myrick emphasizes the economic impact of the marathon, stating that it injects millions of dollars into Chattanooga’s economy. “It’s a big push for heads in beds and getting folks into our community that live outside of our market,” he noted, emphasizing the significance of hospitality and local commerce during the event.

Logistical Considerations for Attendees

To accommodate the marathon activities, Reggie White Boulevard will close from Friday at 6:00 am until Sunday at 9:00 pm. The closures will affect various areas, particularly on Saturday when the 5k, 10k, and kids fun run will disrupt traffic on Main Street from Riverfront Parkway to Central Avenue between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm. On Sunday, the half and full marathon will generate the most traffic congestion, with significant closures anticipated from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Road Closures and Traffic Management

On Saturday, several streets will be closed to facilitate the races. Important closures include:

  • Main Street from Reggie White Blvd. to Central Avenue
  • West 13th Street from Cowart Street to Carter Street
  • Cowart Street from Main Street to West 13th Street

During the Kids Fun Run, additional routes affected will include parts of Chestnut and Carter Streets. The following day, the half and full marathon will see closures on major arteries including Carter Street and Chestnut Street, ensuring safety for the participants.

Advice for Local Drivers

As the marathon approaches, Myrick advises residents and drivers to exercise caution due to various street closings and increased traffic. Law enforcement will be present to ensure that motorists can navigate their routes effectively while keeping runners safe. “You’ll see a lot of cones. You’ll see a lot of blinking lights. Pay attention if you run into that stuff,” he stated, encouraging everyone to cooperate for the success and safety of the event.
