The Benefits of a Vegan Diet for Athletes: Insights from Ultrarunner Flo Neuschwander

In the realm of sports nutrition, the foundation of success lies in maintaining a balanced diet, as illuminated by renowned ultrarunner Flo Neuschwander. He emphasizes straightforward advice: “Don’t eat any rubbish!” This advice serves as a fundamental principle for athletes, particularly for those with rigorous training regimes and specific dietary requirements, especially if following a vegan lifestyle, as Neuschwander does since January 2020.

Fueling the Body for Performance

For athletes like Neuschwander, proper nutrition is paramount. It’s not merely about eating healthy, but optimizing dietary choices to fuel the body for peak performance. Regularly taking on unprecedented challenges, such as his notable campaign “Running from Laufen to Laufen“—where he covered an impressive 550 kilometers and climbed over 10,000 meters in just seven days—stresses the crucial need for nutrient-dense foods that provide adequate energy and recovery.

The Shift to Veganism

Neuschwander explains that his transition to a vegan diet was inspired by his wife’s long-standing commitment to it. He approached the decision thoughtfully, opting to forego traditional indulgences for healthier alternatives. “I can do without a few burgers,” he reflects, showcasing how athletes can adapt their diets while still enjoying a varied range of foods. His choice has proven beneficial, leading to substantial improvements in both his fitness and recovery times.

A Day on Neuschwander’s Plate

What’s a typical day of meals for this ultrarunner? For breakfast, he enjoys wholemeal bread with vegan butter, jam, or chocolate cream. When lunchtime comes around, a quick snack of gnocchi or soy yogurt with fruit keeps him satisfied, while dinner is a family affair with highlights like vegetable lasagna prepared with cashew cream and vegan cheese. These meals emphasize Neuschwander’s strategy of cooking fresh, wholesome ingredients, supporting the idea that “the easiest way to eat healthy is to cook for yourself.”

Athletic Nutrition: The Right Balance

Performance Nutritionist Dr. Stephen Smith highlights the necessity of tailored diets for athletes, particularly those engaging in endurance sports like running. Neuschwander’s meals are designed to provide essential carbohydrates before and after competitions.
