The Upcoming 2025 Donegal Half Marathon: A Celebration of Community and Athletics

The highly anticipated Donegal Half Marathon is set to return on Sunday, August 24th, 2025, in Letterkenny. In partnership with Kernan’s, this event promises to bring together runners of all skill levels from across the region and beyond. First launched in 2014, the marathon has steadily grown in popularity, drawing nearly 600 participants in its previous edition.

Myles Sweeney, Chairman of the Donegal Half Marathon, highlighted the event’s success at its launch. “Our ability to attract participants from various backgrounds is key to the race’s popularity,” he stated. The event focuses not only on encouraging broad participation but also bringing elite athletes into the mix, creating a vibrant and competitive atmosphere.

The marathon thrives due to the collaborative efforts of various community groups and supporters. Organizations such as Letterkenny CDP and Letterkenny Century Cinemas play pivotal roles, especially in organizing family and children’s events. Sweeney expressed gratitude towards these partners for their continuous support, which enhances the event experience for all involved.

Recognizing the importance of sponsorship, Sweeney also acknowledged Kernan’s, the main sponsor since 2019, for their ongoing commitment to the marathon. He further highlighted the significant contributions from Donegal County Council, which, alongside the DFI grant, helps to sustain and promote the race. Other supporters include Optum, Fáilte Ireland, the Irish Red Cross, and Donegal Sports Partnership, all of whom play crucial roles in the event’s organization.

During the launch, Damian Daly from Kernan’s expressed the company’s pride in sponsoring the event for the seventh consecutive year. Reflecting on its origins, Daly recounted his initial invitation from the late Dessie Larkin, emphasizing the marathon’s significance to the local community and athletics in the county. “It’s rewarding to be part of a local event that promotes health and community spirit,” he remarked.

Letterkenny-Milford’s Mayor, Cllr Gerry McMonagle, also shared his enthusiasm, recalling the inception of the marathon during one of his council meetings. He noted the overwhelming community support that continues to develop, with local businesses rallying to contribute along the way. “This event not only fosters athleticism but also enhances the reputation of Donegal as a vibrant community,” he added.
