ESPN Launches Fifty/50 Initiative to Celebrate Women in Sports

ORLANDO, Florida — ESPN recently marked the unofficial launch of its groundbreaking Fifty/50 initiative during the 2021 Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend on February 27. This event, part of the celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of the Walt Disney World Resort, featured 50 female runners, each embodying unique stories and experiences, uniting in a common goal to foster community and support women’s empowerment.

The Fifty/50 initiative is a collaborative effort between ESPN and The Walt Disney Company, designed to highlight the civil rights journey of women within the sports and cultural landscape. This initiative also commemorates the historic passing of Title IX, a federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational institutions receiving federal funding and has been crucial in ensuring equal opportunities for women in sports since its enactment.

Officially launched on International Women’s Day and during Women’s History Month, Fifty/50 aims to present a diverse range of content and experiences that explore the intersection of women, sports, culture, and the ongoing fight for gender equality. Debra OConnell, president of Networks for Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, expressed pride in the initiative, stating that it reflects both the progress made in the last five decades and the work still needed to achieve true equality.

Highlighting the Stories of Women Athletes

Throughout June 2022, the initiative will spotlight various significant stories via compelling content. Highlights include “37 Words,” a four-part documentary series directed by Dawn Porter and Nicole Newnham, chronicling the fight for equal rights within educational and athletic realms. Another feature, “Dream On,” directed by Kristen Lappas, will explore the groundbreaking achievements of the 1996 United States Women’s Olympic basketball team—marking the first multi-part 30 for 30 focused on a women’s sports narrative.

Additionally, the Fifty/50 Shorts will encompass five short films showcasing diverse stories of women in sports, with all productions led by women directors and producers. ABC Owned Television Stations will further present 50 inspiring accounts of pioneering women, shedding light on the profound impact of the 37-word law that reshaped opportunities for women across the United States.

Documentaries Aimed at Empowerment

The featured stories from ABC-oriented stations, including ABC7/WABC-TV in New York, ABC7/KABC-TV in Los Angeles, and many more, will premiere on March 17, followed by additional shows on April 14 and May 12. ABC’s Race and Culture Content Team will curate “Our America: Fifty/50,” a series of eight short documentaries focusing on young women and girls associated with the Women Sports Foundation and espnW’s Sports 4 Life Program, emphasizing their quest for equity in athletics and activism.

Celebrating Title IX’s Impact on Women in Sports

Chairman Jimmy Pitaro of ESPN remarked on the significance of this initiative, highlighting the milestone that Title IX represents. He stated, “Our commitment to sharing compelling narratives and supporting women in sports remains unwavering.” The Fifty/50 initiative reflects ESPN and The Walt Disney Company’s dedication to celebrating women’s achievements and addressing the ongoing challenges in sports representation and equality.

An Ongoing Commitment to Equality

Presented by Champion and Google, the Fifty/50 initiative will continue to offer engaging content across diverse platforms in June, encompassing various formats like podcasts, features, digital content, and more. As the initiative unfolds, additional information will be made available to showcase the vital role of women in sports through storytelling and media representation.
