Tom Hollins Sets New FKT for Self-Supported Winter Wainwrights Round

Former Montane Winter Spine Race champion Tom Hollins has made headlines with his remarkable achievement of setting a new fastest known time (FKT) for a self-supported winter Wainwrights round. This impressive feat showcases not just his physical endurance but also his ability to navigate the challenges of winter conditions in the stunning Lake District of the UK.

The Wainwrights Challenge

The Wainwrights challenge is a grueling undertaking that includes 214 peaks across the Lake District, as conceptualized by the famous fellwalker Alfred Wainwright. Spanning over 500 kilometers, this challenging route is characterized by difficult terrain and an elevation gain exceeding 36,000 meters — equivalent to the ascent of Mount Everest four times. It is a tremendous test of both physical stamina and mental fortitude for any adventurer.

A Record-Setting Journey

In a remarkable display of resilience, Hollins completed the self-supported winter Wainwrights round in just eight days, nine hours, 44 minutes, and 57 seconds. His journey was far from easy, as he faced a plethora of weather challenges, including snow and gale-force winds. Not only did he break the previous self-supported winter record, but he also surpassed the best summer time of 14 days and 11 hours, an unprecedented achievement in the history of the challenge.

Highlighting a Career of Achievements

This stunning accomplishment adds to Hollins’ already impressive portfolio. He won the Montane Winter Spine Race in 2017, broke a vertical ascent record during a 195-mile charity marathon on Pendle Hill in Lancashire, and participated in the famed Barkley Marathons two years ago. Remarkably, he balances these extreme challenges with his professional role as a Consultant Anaesthetist and Deputy Medical Director at Airedale Hospital in Yorkshire, showcasing his ability to excel in multiple domains.

Reflection on Previous Attempts

In a recent social media post, Hollins shared his motivation for this successful attempt. He previously endeavored a winter Wainwrights round in December 2021 but faced several obstacles that led to an unsuccessful outcome. By refocusing on the Spine race for a couple of winters, he ultimately realized that a solo, self-supported attempt would be necessary to accomplish his goal of pushing his limits and achieving a personal milestone. With this new goal in mind, he booked time off work to seize the opportunity when the weather conditions were favorable.

Navigating Winter Conditions

Logistically, Hollins had to make detailed preparations for a self-supported round, which excluded any external assistance. He strategically booked accommodations along the route and pre-positioned supplies to ensure he could safely navigate the isolated sections of the Wainwrights. As the start date approached, he decided to embark on his journey despite knowing that the forecast had changed, highlighting his willingness to embrace the unpredictability of mountain weather.

A Rewarding Experience Amidst Challenges

Although he encountered gale-force winds and physically demanding conditions, Hollins described moments of breathtaking beauty as he progressed through the Wainwrights. His journey culminated in experiencing picturesque views of the Lake District on several calm and sunny days. He fondly referred to these moments as “totally magical”, indicating a profound connection with the stunning surroundings he traversed, which made the arduous journey worth every effort.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

Hollins concluded his journey with a triumphant return to Keswick, where he reflected on his experience and the lessons learned along the way. His accomplishment not only sets a new standard in the realm of ultrarunning and winter challenges but also illustrates the essence of perseverance and personal growth. With such a successful venture behind him, the adventure enthusiast is likely to continue pushing boundaries and inspiring others in the world of endurance sports.
