The intriguing combination of running and pizza came alive in a unique experience: the New York City Pizza Marathon. Imagine running the famed 26.2 miles of Manhattan while savoring five slices of pizza, one after every five-mile segment. While this idea may sound outlandish to many, it represents a growing trend of themed marathons that cater to unique tastes and interests. The goal was simple: combine the city’s iconic pizza with the thrilling experience of long-distance running in one of the busiest cities in the world.

The challenge of this event is not just the physical exertion required for a marathon but also the unique logistics involved in coordinating pizza stops while on the run. For runners like Forest Woodward, an adventure photographer, and filmmaker Sanjay Rawal, the thrill lies in merging their passion for running with the joy of enjoying delicious food. These individuals are not just casual runners; both have notable accomplishments in various ultramarathons, highlighting their understanding of endurance and the joys of culinary experiences.

Setting out from Bedford-Stuyvesant on a Friday afternoon, the team embarked on what turned out to be an unforgettable journey. The initial thought might be that munching on pizza every five miles could lead to digestive issues, especially in a city where public restrooms are notoriously scarce. Still, the adventurous spirit fueled their determination. Starting their run through Brooklyn, they even made a stop at Junior’s to indulge in their famous cheesecake, revealing their philosophy of prioritizing enjoyment alongside physical activity.

Their marathon route was not meticulously planned to hit the city’s “best” pizza joints; instead, their mission was to run and eat on the fly. With several pizza restaurants lining the city blocks, the likelihood of finding a slice was high. The first designated pizza spot was Dona Bella Pizza, and the crew took their first slice just four miles in, setting a gastronomical tone for the rest of the run. As they navigated through iconic areas like Times Square and Columbus Circle, the flavors of New York’s culinary scene were as integral to their marathon experience as the miles they covered.

However, the dynamics of eating while running became apparent as the marathon progressed. Enthusiasm quickly waned as their stomachs adjusted to the continuous influx of pizza. The experience emphasized that not every culinary bite could be appreciated during such a physically demanding activity. At one point, Carl, one of the participants, found himself lagging behind, which added a humorous twist to the pizza marathon concept. One can easily imagine how the enthusiasm for the third slice would diminish amidst a rigorous running schedule.

Central Park provided a welcome respite from city streets as the marathon team pressed on toward their final pizza stops. Each mile brought about new challenges, not just physically but also gastronomically. By the time they reached John and Tony’s Pizza near the Queensboro Bridge, decisions had to be made about the type of slice each runner would tackle. Some chose to stray from cheesy options, aware of the potential stomach issues that could arise from such indulgence. It turned into a scenario of balancing flavors with the harsh realities of physical exertion.

As they crossed the Queensboro Bridge, the nightscape added a beautiful backdrop to their endeavor, making them ponder their unique form of fun. Even amidst discomfort, there was a sense of accomplishment and cleverness in concocting their own version of a marathon experience. By the end, having logged several miles with numerous pizza intervals, the reality set in that they not only ran a marathon but did so in an unconventional yet memorable way.

Reaching the final stop, Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop, they reflected on their journey. Although full and somewhat pizza-fatigued, the team savored the last slice. The experience brought joy and satisfied their adventurous cravings but ultimately highlighted the importance of mastering both travel and food. The New York City Pizza Marathon underscores the message that one can embark on unique adventures, combining fitness and culinary delights in the vibrant atmosphere of the city. This event is a testament to the idea that meaningful experiences can often come from blending unexpected passions.
