Cowtown Marathon: A Celebration of Community and Commitment

Since its inception in 1979, the Cowtown Marathon has evolved into a staple event in Fort Worth, Texas. Taking place during the last week of February, this annual marathon attracts thousands of runners and spectators, while showcasing the remarkable spirit of community and dedication that defines the city. As the largest multi-event road race in North Texas, the Cowtown Marathon has become more than just a race; it is a celebration of health, friendship, and shared goals.

A Global Gathering of Runners

The Cowtown Marathon is not just a local affair. With over 26,000 participants annually, this event draws runners from across the globe, including athletes from 14 different nations. According to statistics from the 2025 race, the event registered 26,206 participants—its highest turnout since a 2015 ice storm forced cancellations. Runners traveled from all 50 states and countries as far away as France and Canada, contributing to a combined total of 2,283,707 miles covered by participants. This thriving turnout showcases the race’s growing international reputation while highlighting Fort Worth’s welcoming atmosphere.

Community Dedication: Volunteers Make It Happen

Behind the scenes, a dedicated group of volunteers is the backbone of the Cowtown Marathon. Heidi Schwartz, the marathon’s executive director, emphasizes the importance of these volunteers, stating, “It’s not just a race — it’s a tradition that brings us all together.” Planning begins months in advance yet intensifies as race day approaches, culminating in a monumental community effort involving thousands of individuals. Their roles encompass organizing water stations, medical support, and maintaining a clean course, all of which ensure a seamless experience for runners.

The Scale of the Event

The logistics involved in the Cowtown Marathon are impressive. On race day, the team distributes staggering quantities of supplies, including 18,000 bananas, 10,000 biscuits, and more than 350,000 paper cups. Additionally, over 300 police officers help maintain safety throughout the event. The remarkable effort exemplifies the teamwork that makes the Cowtown Marathon a safe and enjoyable event for all participants.

Sustainability Efforts and Post-Race Commitment

In alignment with its mission for community and environmental responsibility, the Cowtown Marathon is recognized as a certified green race. The event embraces sustainability through recycling initiatives, including cardboard and cans, as well as composting food waste, while partnering with local organizations. Post-race cleanup is another critical aspect, with volunteers working diligently to ensure that the course is left cleaner than it was before, embodying the spirit of stewardship that the marathon promotes.

A Heartfelt Return: Supporting Local Children

The Cowtown Marathon also extends its impact beyond just runners. Through its Children’s Activities for Life & Fitness (CALF) program, the event donates over 5,400 pairs of new running shoes to underprivileged children at local schools each year. This initiative goes beyond footwear; it promotes health, confidence, and empowerment. Volunteers are essential in executing this program, and the smiling faces of children receiving their new shoes serve as a powerful reminder of the marathon’s mission to support future generations.

Building a Lasting Legacy

As the Cowtown Marathon reaches its 47th iteration, it continues to emphasize its legacy of health, fitness, and community involvement. With each passing year, the event grows in size and scope, fostering connections among runners, volunteers, and supporters alike. For those who volunteer to distribute water, for the children wearing their new shoes, and for the runners tackling their final miles, the Cowtown Marathon is more than a race—it’s a community celebration of determination and resilience.

Looking Forward to the Next Cowtown Weekend

The anticipation for next year’s Cowtown weekend, scheduled from February 27 to March 1, 2026, is already building. Participants and volunteers alike are encouraged to stay informed about race updates and community initiatives through the official website at www.cowtownmarathon.org. As the event continues to grow, the Cowtown Marathon reaffirms its commitment to health, togetherness, and service, ensuring that future generations can partake in this meaningful tradition.
