The 6th Annual Wendell Foster Half Marathon & 5K: A Community Celebration of Fitness and Inclusion

This Saturday marks the sixth annual Wendell Foster Half Marathon & 5K, an event that encourages runners and walkers of all abilities to unite for a common cause. Anticipation is high as more than 900 participants from 16 states and 146 cities have already registered, making this year’s race the largest to date.

Event Overview

Presented by Owensboro Health, the race features a variety of divisions tailored to suit different participants. Athletes can choose from the 13.1-mile half marathon, the 3.1-mile 5K, the Duo Team Division, or the Steps Division. The Steps Division is particularly noteworthy, as it enables individuals with disabilities to complete their selected distance in the weeks leading up to race day, allowing them to track their progress online.

Inclusivity and Community Support

The Duo Team Division, introduced in 2019, provides a unique opportunity for runners to support individuals with disabilities by pushing them in a racing chair during the event. “We are thrilled to bring our community together once again for this incredible event in support of Wendell Foster,” said Race Director Kara Howard. “This race is not just about running or walking; it’s about empowerment and celebration.”

Kickoff Expo and Race Day Schedule

The race weekend begins with an expo from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday at the Owensboro Convention Center. Participants can check in, pick up their race packets, and explore over 20 vendor booths offering promotional items. It is important to note that race-day registration will not be available, so registered runners should plan to pick up their bibs on Friday or on race morning at the Convention Center.

Race Route and Milestones

Both the half marathon and 5K will commence in downtown Owensboro, showcasing a flat and fast course that weaves through local neighborhoods, streets, and the Greenbelt. A highlight of the race is when participants pass through Wendell Foster’s campus at mile one, fostering a spirit of community as residents and supporters cheer on the athletes. “The energy from the crowd at that moment is unforgettable,” Howard added. “It serves as a reminder of the impact this event has on our community.”

Post-Race Celebration and Community Involvement

After the race, all athletes and their families are invited to the Official After-Party at Goodwood Owensboro, conveniently located near the finish line at Smothers Park. This gathering provides an excellent opportunity for participants to share their experiences and celebrate their achievements together.

Traffic Advisory for Local Residents

Local residents are advised to prepare for road closures and traffic delays on race morning. Full road closures will take effect at 7 a.m. on J.R. Miller Boulevard (between 18th Street and Salem Drive) and on Veteran’s Boulevard. Additionally, traffic delays are anticipated from 7:30 to 11:35 a.m. on several main streets including Locust Street and Veach Road. Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution and allow extra travel time.
