Thousands Turn Out for Liverpool Half Marathon 2025

A “no exceptions” warning has been issued following the successful execution of the 2025 Liverpool Half Marathon, where an impressive crowd of 12,000 runners gathered at Pier Head for a memorable day of athleticism and community spirit. The annual event, which took place on Sunday, March 23, showcased the city’s vibrant running community and attracted participants from around the globe, solidifying its status as one of the premier road races in the North West.

Ian Lawton Claims Victory Again

In a thrilling display of endurance and skill, Ian Lawton from Gateacre was crowned the male champion of the 13.1-mile course. Having previously secured victory in 2023, Lawton expressed disbelief and pride in his achievement, stating, “Two years ago, I won the half marathon, and that was like a dream. Now, at the age of 43, I really didn’t think it was possible to recreate 2023.” He emphasized the sense of camaraderie among participants, noting the amazing atmosphere that made the race even more special this year.

Women’s Winner and Other Highlights

The women’s category was won by Lucy Fairclough, who contributed to the day’s overall excitement. In addition to the half marathon, the event also featured a shorter 10-mile run, where Paul Edwards claimed the top spot among the male competitors, with Ellie Hunter securing victory for the women. This variety of races allows athletes of all levels to participate, making it accessible and appealing for many.

Historic Event Draws Global Participation

Established in 1994, the Liverpool Half Marathon has become one of the longest-running and most esteemed events on the regional racing calendar. This year, runners not only came from local areas but also from countries such as Argentina, Chile, Cyprus, and Denmark, demonstrating the event’s international appeal. The timing of the race, occurring just weeks before major events like the London and Manchester marathons, makes it an ideal preparatory race for many athletes.

BTR’s Significant Milestone

The organizers, BTR, described the turnout as an “unprecedented jump” in registrations, noting that this year marked the largest Liverpool Half Marathon yet. Race Director Alan Rothwell highlighted the overwhelming demand for participation, attributing this success to the event’s longstanding reputation and the iconic setting along the Liverpool waterfront. “It’s magical, especially when packed with thousands of eager runners,” Rothwell said, capturing the spirit of the occasion.

Future Races and Entry Information

In a communication sent to participants shortly after the event, BTR announced that entries for the 2026 Liverpool Half Marathon and 10-Miler opened immediately. The message stressed the urgency for interested runners to secure their spots early, as the upcoming event was expected to sell out rapidly, similar to 2025. The 2026 race is scheduled for Sunday, March 15, and organizers emphasized that there will be “no exceptions” once the capacity is reached to ensure the safety of all competitors.

Join the Liverpool Running Community

The Liverpool Half Marathon stands out not just as a race but as a celebration of community, health, and resilience. For those interested in participating, further information is available on the official [Liverpool Echo website](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/liverpool-half-marathon), and would-be participants are encouraged to register for future events promptly. With its combination of competitive spirit and community engagement, the Liverpool Half Marathon is a must-join event for runners looking to challenge themselves and experience the unique atmosphere that the city has to offer.
