Manchester Marathon 2023: Road Closures and Event Details

The highly anticipated Manchester Marathon is set to take place on Sunday, April 27, 2023, with an expected 32,000 runners gearing up to tackle the challenging 26.2-mile course. As one of Europe’s largest marathon events, this yearly fixture attracts participants from all over the globe, drawing attention not only for its athleticism but also for the logistical challenges it presents, including a host of road closures that local residents, commuters, and businesses should be aware of.

Road Closures in Old Trafford

The marathon’s starting line is located on the A56, adjacent to Chester Road, making it a focal point for road closures in the Old Trafford area. The A56 will be closed on race day from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m., impacting Chester Road, Bridgewater Way, Wharfside Way, and Talbot Road. Additionally, through routes to the A5063 will be restricted from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., while Stretford Road will be closed from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m., with parking restrictions commencing the night before the event.

Stretford Road Closures

As participants make their way through Stretford, several key roads will also be affected. Edge Lane and Wilbraham Road will close down from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Kingsway will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Stretford section of Chester Road and Chapel Lane will experience temporary closures, with full shutdowns taking place from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. For anyone in this area, planning alternatives is crucial to avoid inconvenience.

Sale and Surrounding Areas

In Sale, Broad Road will close from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., while School Road, adjacent to Sale Town Hall and Waterside Arts Centre, will be closed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dane Road will see closures at different times, and Cross Road will also be shut down during the day. To ensure minimal disruption, motorists should consider alternative routes and avoid the area if possible.

Implications for Nearby Boroughs

Brooklands and Timperley will also feel the impact of the marathon. Washway Road will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., while Shaftesbury Road and Stockport Road will not be accessible from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents in these areas should brace for closures that may affect access to homes, schools, and local businesses.

Key Closures in Altrincham and Whalley Range

Altrincham will not be exempt from the marathon’s disruption, with Oakfield Road, Stamford New Road, and Market Street closed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. Similarly, in Whalley Range, Barlow Moor Road, Manchester Road, and Upper Chorlton Road will be shut down from 9 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. It’s essential for residents to seek information on detours that may assist with navigating these closures.

Additional Information and Resources

For those looking for a comprehensive overview of the road closures, the marathon’s official website provides up-to-date information and will continue to do so as the event approaches. An interactive Google map is available for runners and spectators, detailing affected areas and available detours. For ongoing updates regarding the marathon, residents can also visit Manchester Marathon website and Transport for Greater Manchester.

As the day of the marathon nears, preparation and awareness are key. Whether you’re a participant, spectator, or local resident, being informed about road closures and alternative routes will help ensure a smoothly executed event for all involved.
