On October 26, 2024, Riley Brady, a talented non-binary runner from Boulder, Colorado, clinched an impressive victory at the Javelina Jundred, achieving one of the fastest female times in the race’s history. This success not only secured Brady a second “golden ticket” entry into the prestigious Western States 100 but also underscored the challenges faced during ultramarathon running.

A Disrupted Previous Performance

Brady’s struggles with race-day nutrition were evident in previous competitions, including Western States and the Black Canyon 100K. The runner had experienced violent nausea and vomiting that hindered their performance. Aiming to break this cycle, Brady enlisted the help of Vic Johnson, a registered dietitian with expertise in mountain athletes. He prescribed a hydration strategy aimed at consuming at least 500mL of fluids per hour during the race.

Innovative Nutrition Strategies

Brady turned to a liquid diet as a solution for their nutrition problems. With temperatures soaring close to 100°F during the race, this decision proved wise. By relying more on liquid calories rather than energy gels, Brady noticed an improvement, managing to avoid the debilitating stomach issues that had plagued them in the past.

The Javelina Jundred Course

The Javelina Jundred consists of five 20-mile loops through the desert, offering around 1,580 feet of climbing and descending with each lap. This unique format allows competitors to mentally compartmentalize the race into manageable segments rather than focusing on the daunting 100 miles in total. Brady adopted a mentality of treating the race as a series of laps, which significantly aided their strategy on race day.

Handling Extreme Temperatures

Though Brady dislikes the cold, they excel in hot conditions. They prepared by doing sauna sessions and running during peak temperatures. On race day, Brady effectively utilized cooling techniques, including ice water immersion and special bandanas designed for heat management, allowing them to maintain a steady pace without overheating.

Success with Super Shoes

Brady’s equipment choice also played a pivotal role in their victory. Just weeks before the race, they tried Nike Vaporfly road running super shoes for the first time, finding them exceptionally comfortable and lightweight. Their positive experience with the shoes contributed to their ability to perform at a high level throughout the race, especially given the untechnical nature of the Javelina course.

A Supportive Community

Running is as much about community as it is about competition for Brady. They have turned down sponsorships that didn’t align with their values, focusing instead on maintaining a sense of freedom and authenticity in their running career. Their success at the Javelina wasn’t just a personal victory; it also reflected the support from friends and family, who played significant roles throughout their journey.

The Future Ahead

Looking to the future, Brady aims to excel at the Western States 100 in 2025, with hopes of placing in the top 10. They express a desire to balance competitive running with engagement in their local running community, indicating a transition from participant to supporter in future Javelina events.

In conclusion, the story of Riley Brady underscores the importance of preparation, community, and attitude in the world of ultrarunning. Their approach to nutrition, mental strategies, and reliance on a supportive network not only drove their success but also serves as a guide for aspiring ultramarathon runners looking to navigate the complexities of long-distance races.
