Terry and Joy VanderWert’s journey through triathlons reflects an inspiring tale of resilience, partnership, and adventure that spans over a decade. Transitioning to retirement and adjusting to an empty nest, Terry discovered his passion for triathlons in 2011. Inspired by the joys of family road trips, he boldly proposed completing a triathlon in every state before turning 70. This marked the onset of a remarkable adventure extending over 12 years, culminating in significant life lessons and unforgettable experiences.

The Beginning: A Spark of Inspiration

The couple’s inaugural race took place on June 5, 2011, at the Buffalo Triathlon in Minnesota. Looking back, Terry recalls, “After registering for this triathlon, I realized how little I knew about preparing for one.” This realization wasn’t merely a moment of self-doubt, but rather a catalyst that would inspire an extensive journey through 50 states, filled with new escapades and connections.

The VanderWerts quickly turned their ambitious goal into a reality, completing further races in Minnesota and Massachusetts within the same year. Although Joy was not a triathlete herself, her role was pivotal; she served as a planner and a steadfast volunteer, providing support and motivation throughout their journey.

A Quest Across America

Over the following years, they clocked numerous miles, traversing from state to state, where Terry participated in various triathlons while Joy cheered from the sidelines. In his new book, Triathlon Adventures Across America: Swimming, Biking, Running, and Making Memories Together, Terry chronicles this incredible journey, detailing his experiences in each state. His meticulous notes, kept over the years, document everything—from training and racing strategies to the unique cultural experiences gained in each region.

A Community with a Purpose

Throughout their travels, they discovered a vibrant triathlon community that echoed warmth, camaraderie, and mutual respect. Each state bore its unique characteristics, manifested through local cuisines and cultural quirks, yet the spirit of the triathletes was remarkably consistent. Joy reflects, “The triathlon community was very similar across the United States, a warm and inviting environment with camaraderie and positive vibes.”

The VanderWerts particularly appreciated how these triathlon races often supported various charities. They witnessed inspiring moments, such as families racing alongside loved ones with disabilities, highlighting the essence of support and compassion inherent in the sport.

Lessons Learned and Memories Made

Looking back over their two-dozen stops, the VanderWerts acknowledge the plethora of lessons learned throughout the journey. Terry emphasizes the importance of being prepared: “Never try something for the first time on race day.” Ironically, at his final race in May 2023, he ventured into uncharted territory by participating in a triathlon that incorporated kayaking, an experience he had never tried before. Despite his apprehension, he finished strong, demonstrating adaptability and perseverance.

As they traveled through every state, both popular attractions and hidden gems revealed themselves to the couple. “We gained a new perspective on the real America,” notes Terry. Through their experiences, they celebrated not only the physical challenges presented by triathlons but also the enriching bonds forged with fellow triathletes and locals alike.

Life Beyond Triathlons

Post-racing, the VanderWerts continue to embrace challenges together. Today, they are delving into Latin dancing, showcasing their joint commitment to lifelong learning and adventure. “Life is never boring, because we are both willing to try new things,” Joy asserts, accentuating their mutual enthusiasm for discovery.

In reflecting on their decade-long escapade, Terry and Joy VanderWert have proven that it’s never too late to embark on an adventure. Their story exemplifies the spirit of aging gracefully, using physical activity as a means to foster connection, joy, and fulfillment. For those inspired by their journey, participating in triathlons can be an empowering step towards personal transformation and community involvement.

Join the Triathlon Movement

As the VanderWerts discovered, embarking on this athletic journey can serve more than just personal fulfillment; it is about community, resilience, and shared experiences. If you’re contemplating joining the world of triathlons—or even participating in local charity races—there’s a rich community waiting to welcome you.
