Introduction to Vermont’s Premier Running Events

As the running season approaches, RunVermont has officially announced the opening of registration for its flagship events: the M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay and the Half Marathon Unplugged, presented by Switchback Brewing Co. These annual events attract thousands of participants and spectators to Burlington, Vermont, celebrating the spirit of community and fitness.

The M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay

Scheduled for May 24, 2026, the M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay is recognized as Vermont’s largest single-day sporting event, boasting over 5,000 registrants and an impressive 20,000 spectators. The marathon features a picturesque 26.2-mile course that showcases some of Burlington’s most iconic sights, including the Church Street Marketplace and the scenic Burlington Bike Path along Lake Champlain.

The weekend also caters to younger runners with the Vermont City Two-Mile and Mini Marathon events taking place on May 23, 2026. The participation options extend to encompass a full marathon, two relay categories sponsored by Darn Tough Vermont, and youth-focused events, thereby fostering a love for running among the next generation of Vermonters.

Community and Corporate Support

M&T Bank remains a prominent supporter of the Vermont City Marathon, with Vermont Regional President Heidi Stumpff underscoring the significance of this local tradition. “This year, we’re especially excited to expand our partnership to include RunVermont’s youth events, fostering a passion for running in the next generation of Vermonters,” she stated.

Darn Tough Vermont will also make its mark by sponsoring the relay portions of the race, offering complimentary socks to the first 100 team captains who register. Katie Jones, Senior Brand Manager at Darn Tough, emphasized the event’s role in uniting the community, stating that it creates a vibrant atmosphere that inspires all participants.

Half Marathon Unplugged

The 20th annual Half Marathon Unplugged, taking place on April 11, 2026, is another highly anticipated event for local runners seeking to kick off their spring season. Presented by Switchback Brewing Co., this race spans a scenic 13.1-mile course, starting in Colchester and extending along the picturesque Burlington Bike Path next to Lake Champlain. Registration is open for various formats, including a two-person relay and a virtual option, making it accessible to a broad spectrum of participants.

Joe Connelly, Chief of Race Operations for RunVermont, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming race, noting, “Half Marathon Unplugged is the perfect way to kick off race season in Vermont.” Due to heightened interest that led to a sellout last year, the race features a two-wave start format to accommodate more runners, enhancing the experience for all participants.

Registration Details

Registration for both the M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon and the Half Marathon Unplugged opened on October 1, 2025. Early registrants can take advantage of the lowest pricing available. For those interested in participating in both events, a bundled registration option is available for additional savings. It’s essential to note that prices will incrementally increase as race day approaches, encouraging prospective participants to secure their spots early.

All registration prices now include transaction fees, simplifying the process for participants. Additionally, an automatic discount of $20 applies to registrations made with an M&T Bank credit or debit card for both the marathon and youth events.

About RunVermont

RunVermont is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting running as a lifelong activity, hosting premier running events throughout the state. Beyond the marquee marathon and half marathon, they organize various community running programs and races throughout the year.

In conclusion, the 2026 running season in Vermont promises to be nothing short of exhilarating, thanks to the efforts of organizations like RunVermont.
