Kota Kinabalu’s Sulaman Ultra Marathon 2025: A Showcase of Local Talent

Kota Kinabalu witnessed an exceptional display of endurance and talent during the Sulaman Ultra Marathon 2025 held in Tuaran last Sunday. The event attracted more than 500 participants, including runners from outside the state, and highlighted the growing popularity of ultra-marathons in Malaysia.

Men’s Open Championship

Local hero Arikchely Ariyl Arikah, representing Kiulu, clinched the men’s 50km open title with an impressive finish time of 4 hours, 11 minutes, and 6 seconds. His performance not only showcased his strength and perseverance but also set a benchmark for future participants in this grueling race. The runners-up also delivered commendable performances, with Awang Amirul Yazid Awang Azmi finishing second in 4:46:26, followed closely by Mohd Yusof at 4:47:59. The competition remained fierce, with Mohd Taufiq Rasdi and Kasman Dali completing the top five in times of 4:48:26 and 4:59:50, respectively.

Women’s Open Championship

In the women’s category, Dazeree Joan Joannes from Tamparuli crossed the finish line, claiming the title with a time of 5 hours, 37 minutes. Her endurance and speed were critical in navigating the challenging course. Other distinguished female runners included Jessica Suip, who finished second in 5:53:43, and Melvi Ehen in third at 6:22:20. Elvina Jimin and Adeline Mustal rounded out the top five with finish times of 6:31:14 and 6:35:01, respectively, reflecting the competitive spirit of the event.

Veterans Show Their Strength

The Sulaman Ultra Marathon also featured a veteran 50km event, showcasing the resilience of more experienced runners. Osman Bujang emerged victorious, clocking in at 4:46:25. He was followed by Ong Choon Keat and Ronnie Francis, who finished with times of 5:26:22 and 5:31:03. In the women’s veteran category, Margretta Walther took home the trophy with a time of 5:52:58, followed by Maria Joycelyn Tugna and Lusia Jail.

Highlighting the 25km Race

The 25km race also drew significant interest, with Rozzain Abby securing the men’s open title in a swift 1:56:22. Next in line was Nursahirul Kadir at 2:01:27, followed by Ahirunnashrah Ahmad at 2:06:34. The women’s title was captured by Sofia Raidin in 2:39:59, with Casandra Severinus and Fredda Evanna Jemie rounding off the top three.

Support and Sponsorship

The Sulaman Ultra Marathon is organized by MHZ Technology Corporation, with the race directed by Halna Mohd Jain. The event received strong backing from various sponsors, including N8 Nutrition, Quaser, and others, along with the support of Tourism Malaysia and the Malaysia Ultra Running Association. This collaboration underscores the significance of the event within the region and its role in promoting health and wellness through sport.

The Growing Popularity of Ultra Marathons in Malaysia

Ultra marathons like the Sulaman Ultra Marathon not only test an athlete’s physical and mental endurance but also inspire community engagement and promote tourism. Events like this attract participants from various backgrounds, making it a platform for showcasing local talent and fostering friendly competition. The growth of such events reflects the shifting mindset towards more active lifestyles among Malaysians.

The Road Ahead

As the dust settles from the excitement of the 2025 edition, one can already look forward to future iterations of the Sulaman Ultra Marathon. The event promises to continue its legacy of challenging runners while providing a supportive environment for both newcomers and seasoned athletes. The connection between athletic pursuits and community involvement will only strengthen as the marathon gains recognition both locally and internationally.
