GWINN, Mich. (WLUC) – This weekend, Gwinn will host an exciting event for athletes and adventure enthusiasts alike: the first-ever Anderson Lake Backyard Ultra, organized by Forsyth Forward. This ultramarathon offers a unique challenge and aims to provide participants with both fun and personal achievement opportunities.

A Unique Ultramarathon Experience

Race Director Bill Hemmila expressed enthusiasm for the inaugural event, highlighting that it marks a significant milestone, being the first of its kind in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.). The Anderson Lake Backyard Ultra is not just another race; it is a test of will, endurance, and personal limits.

Race Format and Structure

The ultramarathon will take place over a demanding 24-hour period, where participants will complete 4.2-mile laps around the beautiful Anderson Lake State Forest Park. Each hour, runners will begin a new loop, and the format encourages runners to set personal goals. Participants can choose how many laps they want to run, allowing for a customizable experience.

“The cool thing is they are 4.2-mile laps,” said Hemmila. “At any point, you can decide that you’re done. Hopefully, you’ll set a goal that’s challenging for yourself. Whether you want to go out and do all 24 laps, that’s awesome.” This flexibility is one of the event’s appealing aspects, as it focuses on personal achievement rather than just competition.

Participate and Win

In a true test of endurance and strategy, the last runner standing wins the competition. However, every participant will take home a medal as a token of their effort and achievement. This reflects the event’s spirit of community and support among participants, irrespective of their individual goals.

Event Details

The Anderson Lake Backyard Ultra is set to commence on Saturday at 8 a.m. and will conclude on Sunday at 8 a.m. With 60 spots available, keen participants must secure their entry with a registration fee of $75. For more information about the race and to register online, visit here.

Join the Excitement

Whether you’re a seasoned ultramarathoner or someone looking to step up to the challenge, the Anderson Lake Backyard Ultra offers an incredible opportunity to challenge yourself while enjoying the scenic beauty of Anderson Lake State Forest Park. It’s an ideal setting to connect with fellow enthusiasts and experience the thrill of pushing beyond your limits.
