Adi Kailash Ultra Marathon: A Historic Event in Pithoragarh

Pithoragarh: The stunning landscapes and unparalleled altitude of Uttarakhand welcomed over 800 athletes for the inaugural Adi Kailash Ultra Marathon as part of the state’s Silver Jubilee Year celebrations. Officially flagged off by Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Ajay Tamta, the marathon took place at a treacherous altitude of over 14,000 feet, where temperatures plummeted to a chilling minus 2 degrees Celsius.

A Unique Gathering of Athletes

The event saw participants ranging from 20 to 65 years old, not only from across India but also from various corners of the globe. Athletes came together, showcasing unmatched determination and zeal against the backdrop of the majestic Adi Kailash Mountain. This ultra marathon, stretching approximately 60 kilometers from Gunji to Kalapani and concluding at Gunji, is a significant move towards promoting adventure sports in high-altitude regions.

Celebrating Adventure and Health

Minister Ajay Tamta expressed pride in holding such a prestigious event on this sacred ground, calling it a momentous occasion. He highlighted that the Adi Kailash Ultra Marathon stands as the country’s first high-altitude ultra marathon, integral to promoting a culture of healthy living and youth empowerment. The minister also pointed out that the event serves as an important initiative for the development of frontier areas.

Impact on Local Tourism

The marathon is poised to ignite tourism in the border regions of Pithoragarh, aiming to bolster the local homestay economy. Nodal officer Utkarsh noted that participants hailed from around 22 states, emphasizing the broad appeal of the event. They received thoughtful gifts upon completion, including soil and stones from Lord Adi Kailash, Parvati Kund, and local handicrafts, further embedding the event’s cultural significance.

Rich Local Flavors

In a gesture of hospitality, athletes were treated to delicious Pahari cuisine, showcasing the rich culinary culture of the region. The District Magistrate of Pithoragarh praised the successful organization of the event, stating it would place the Adi Kailash region and the Vyas Valley prominently on both national and international tourism maps. He recognized the contributions of the Army and the Tourism Department in executing this event, underscoring its potential as a milestone for regional development.

Rewards for Excellence

To further inspire participants, significant cash prizes were announced for the top performers. The male and female winners of the 60-kilometer open race will each take home Rs 2 lakh, while the next four finishers will receive Rs 1.25 lakh, Rs 75,000, Rs 65,000, and Rs 45,000, respectively. This system of rewards is designed to motivate athletes and set a competitive standard for future events.

Looking Ahead

Following the success of this ultra marathon, plans are already underway for a similar event in the higher reaches of Kedarnath, near the India-China border, scheduled for May and June next year. This continuation of high-altitude adventure events serves to encourage both local and international participation in outdoor sports.

Conclusion

The Adi Kailash Ultra Marathon symbolizes not only an athletic challenge but also a commitment to promoting health, wellness, and tourism in Uttarakhand. As the region continues to develop its tourism infrastructure, events like these not only elevate athleticism but also shine a light on the breathtaking beauty and cultural richness of the area.
