Emerging Stars of the Backyard Ultra Scene in Côte d’Ivoire

In the world of ultra-distance running, [**Côte d’Ivoire**](https://www.irunfar.com/amongst-the-cocoa-trees-the-rise-of-trail-running-in-cote-divoire) has begun to make waves, with athletes like Marius Kouakou and Adele Al Khalil setting remarkable African records in the burgeoning backyard ultra format. Marius reset the African record by completing an impressive 85 laps at the prestigious Ultra Tour du Lac de Monteux backyard ultra in 2025, a noteworthy improvement from his previous African record of 56 laps at the What’s Your Limit event in Belgium. Similar accolades were earned by Adele, who recorded the women’s African record at the same Belgian event by finishing 37 laps.

The popularity of backyard ultra races has exploded globally, providing an accessible format for runners to test their limits without the intimidating setup of traditional ultra marathons. This format, characterized by completing a 4.167-mile lap every hour, allows racers to push their endurance further while enjoying a social atmosphere. Pioneered in 2011 by Gary Cantrell, known as Laz, this race style has captivated many in the running community, especially in areas like Côte d’Ivoire, which is marked by challenging climate conditions such as heat and humidity.

A New Wave of Ultra Running in Côte d’Ivoire

The inception of backyard ultras in Côte d’Ivoire can be traced back to a crucial meeting between Frenchman Alain Jolivet and Laz during the 2022 Capital Backyard Ultra in Washington, D.C. Inspired by the potential of the format, Alain, alongside Ivoirian runner Isabelle Diomandé-Konaté, was able to establish the first Backyard Ultra Abidjan in 2023 at Banco National Park.

The inaugural event drew significant participation, with over 100 runners from 19 nationalities showcasing their commitment and enthusiasm. Despite not competing in the first edition, Marius returned for the 2024 event, claiming victory with 19 laps. His swift ascent in the sport reflects not only his talent but also the burgeoning culture of ultra running within Côte d’Ivoire.

Marius Kouakou: From Local Talent to International Contender

Growing up in Gagnoa, a town in the cocoa-rich region of Côte d’Ivoire, Marius’s journey as a runner began with track events during high school. His transition to long-distance running was largely informal, mainly relying on his dedication to running 7 kilometers daily to save money on transportation. This commitment led him to compete in his first half marathon in 2016, where he placed 10th. Despite facing challenges such as the lack of good running shoes, Marius continually demonstrated grit and determination.

His fortunes began to change with his entry into backyard ultra racing. After missing participation in the inaugural race due to tardiness, Marius made a comeback to dominate in 2024. Encouraged by Alain, who recognized Marius’s natural potential, he began to train rigorously for international competition, focusing on proper training techniques and nutrition. By 2025, Marius had set his sights on competing on the world stage, having solidified his reputation at the Côte d’Ivoire national championships.

His training included adaptations to the backyard format, like interval training and strategic napping, which enhanced his performance capabilities. As a result, Marius excelled at the What’s Your Limit race in Belgium and achieved a record-breaking 85 laps in October 2025, significantly increasing awareness of Ivoirian prowess in the sport.

Adele Al Khalil: The Other Record Holder

Adele Al Khalil complements Marius’s achievements by establishing herself as the top female contender in the backyard ultra scene. With a multifaceted athletic background, which includes gymnastics and track, she channeled this experience into long-distance running. Her journey culminated in her participation at the 2025 What’s Your Limit race, where she executed an impressive 37 laps — a new record for women in Africa.

Adele encompasses the spirit of determination in endurance sports, believing that the journey through the backyard ultra format reveals one’s true capabilities. Despite facing challenges, she has consistently emerged as a top contender, often finishing among the leaders in various competitions across Côte d’Ivoire.

The Future of Backyard Ultras in Côte d’Ivoire

The increasing success of the Backyard Ultra Abidjan has become more than a local phenomenon. The events have been flourishing, with participation and laps completed rising year over year, demonstrating a growing interest in ultra running within the country. Organizers have also implemented charitable dimensions into the races, contributing to community efforts such as tree planting and educational aid through supplies for local schools. These initiatives foster a connection between the running community and the broader societal context, motivating runners to engage purposefully in their communities.

[**Côte d’Ivoire**](https://www.irunfar.com/amongst-the-cocoa-trees-the-rise-of-trail-running-in-cote-divoire) serves as a dynamic hub for outdoor enthusiasts and entrepreneurs, drawing a multicultural crowd. Attributes such as the stunning landscapes and the rich agricultural backdrop facilitate running routes that inspire both local and international participants. Under Alain’s guidance, the Backyard Ultra Abidjan stands poised as a core fixture in the regional running calendar, providing elevated opportunities for budding Ivoirian runners like Marius and Adele to shine on a global stage.

As the spotlight widens, the future looks bright for not only these two remarkable athletes but also the expanding community of runners in Côte d’Ivoire. With the continued growth of the backyard ultra racing format, Côte d’Ivoire is both a witness and a participant in the evolving landscape of ultra-endurance sports.
