Massive Turnout for the Annual Liverpool Half Marathon

On Sunday, March 23, the annual Liverpool Half Marathon attracted an impressive 12,000 participants to the Pier Head, making it one of the most notable race events in the North West. With thousands of spectators cheering them on, both local and international runners filled the waterfront, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

The Champions of the Day

Ian Lawton, a resident of Gateacre, claimed the male title in the 13.1-mile race, marking his second consecutive win. Reflecting on his victory, Lawton stated, “Two years ago, I won the half marathon, and that was like a dream. Now, at the age of 43, I really didn’t think it was possible to recreate that.” His enthusiasm for the support received during the race highlighted the vibrant atmosphere, with fellow racers from London expressing surprise at the event’s energy.

Women’s and Other Winners

Lucy Fairclough emerged as the women’s winner of the half marathon. In addition, Paul Edwards clinched victory in the 10-mile race for men, while Ellie Hunter took home the prize for the women’s category. The event, first established in 1994, stands as one of the longest-running and prestigious road races in the region, revered by participants and fans alike.

International Appeal

The race draws runners from diverse locations across the globe, with participants hailing from countries like Argentina, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, and more this year. It serves as an excellent opportunity for athletes to benchmark their training and skills, especially as they prepare for upcoming full marathons in London and Manchester.

Surge in Participation

BTR, the race organizer, noted that this year saw a substantial increase in registrations, which they characterized as an “unprecedented jump.” Race Director Alan Rothwell expressed his delight at the overwhelming demand for places, affirming the event’s significant status within the race calendar.

Safety Measures and Future Events

Following the event, BTR sent out a notice to participants informing them that registration for the 2026 BTR Liverpool Half Marathon would open shortly. With the 2025 event selling out long before the race day, they cautioned potential entrants that spots for the next event are anticipated to fill up rapidly. Rothwell emphasized the importance of early registration for participant safety, stating, “There can be no exceptions once capacity is reached.”

Looking Ahead

The next BTR Liverpool Half Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026. Enthusiastic participants and supporters alike can look forward to another action-packed day on the iconic Liverpool waterfront, promising to be a highlight on the running calendar. With its rich heritage and continued growth, the Liverpool Half Marathon remains a premier event for runners of all abilities and ambitions.
