Araku Utsav ‘Chali’ Kicks Off with Enthusiasm and Cultural Extravaganza

The much-anticipated Araku Utsav, titled ‘Chali’, commenced on a vibrant note in the picturesque Araku Valley, located in the Alluri Sitharama Raju district. Spanning three days, this year’s festival aims to celebrate and showcase the rich tribal culture of the region while attracting a significant number of tourists.

The festival’s opening day was heralded by a lively 5k marathon that took place early in the morning. Approximately 300 participants, including enthusiastic youth and college students, braved the chilly weather to run from the Araku Railway Station to the main venue at the Government Degree College Grounds. This event, flagged off by key officials including District Collector A.S. Dinesh Kumar and Joint Collector Abhishek Goud, served not only as an exhilarating start to the festivities but also promoted awareness about the ‘Sankalpam’ anti-drug campaign. After the run, winners were awarded prizes in recognition of their efforts, adding a competitive yet festive atmosphere to the day.

The official inauguration of Araku Utsav took place at the main venue, where Collector A.S. Dinesh Kumar played traditional drums to mark the start of the festivities. Instead of the conventional ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Collector honored tradition by inaugurating food stalls through the ritual of pounding paddy grains. Attendees can explore diverse stalls featuring handicrafts, souvenirs, and traditional cuisines from across various Indian states, including Nagaland, Manipur, and Rajasthan. This year, stalls were uniquely designed in a ‘thatched house’ setup, enhancing the authentic tribal experience for visitors.

One of the festival’s highlights is the introduction of paragliding and helicopter tourism rides, allowing attendees to experience the breathtaking views of the valley from above. Alongside these exhilarating activities, a ‘Carnival Parade’ showcased a colorful array of tribal performances and folk art, featuring groups like the Basthar Band and dancers from different tribes. The dash of spontaneity was added by local officials who joined in the celebrations, dancing alongside tribal artistes and encouraging community spirit.

Cultural programs continued to captivate audiences throughout the day, with performances displaying traditional dances such as dhimsa, kuchipudi, and various tribal folk dances. These cultural exhibitions not only served to entertain but also educated attendees on the rich heritage of the region, fostering a deeper connection with the local communities. Despite a decent turnout of tourists, some officials speculated that attendance might have been even higher had the festival been scheduled earlier in the month.

Collector A.S. Dinesh Kumar emphasized the core purpose of Araku Utsav: to shine a spotlight on the tribal culture and offer enriching experiences for visitors while promoting Araku as a premier tourist destination. He projected attendance figures of approximately 30,000 to 40,000 visitors over the three-day event, showcasing cultural expressions from eight different states of India while highlighting the artistic talents of the local tribal communities. The festival aims to deliver a diverse experience through its traditional cuisines and engaging cultural performances, drawing in tourists from various backgrounds.

In an appeal to visitors, Collector Kumar urged tourists to respect the pristine environment of Araku Valley by avoiding plastic use and keeping the area clean throughout their stay. This initiative underlines the commitment to sustainable tourism in the region, ensuring that Araku continues to thrive as a breathtaking destination with rich cultural heritage. As Araku Utsav unfolds, it promises to be a delightful celebration that honors tradition while inviting tourists to explore its natural beauty and cultural depth.
