Returning to the Thrill: A BASE Jumping Adventure

On January 22, 2025, experienced BASE jumper Alenka Mali made her way to the top of the Stawamus Chief, a 2,303-foot granite monolith located in Squamish, British Columbia. With over 100 successful jumps under her belt, Alenka was eager to tackle her first jumps back in British Columbia after spending two months BASE jumping in the breathtaking landscapes of Patagonia. However, this seemingly routine jump would turn into a harrowing survival story, showcasing the inherent risks and the critical importance of safety protocols in the sport.

Preparing for the Jump

As Alenka prepared for her jump, she reflected on the hurried packing job she had done before leaving Chile. Distracted while on a phone call with another jumper, she didn’t realize that her gear may not have been optimally prepared. With the winds calming down but a noticeable cross-breeze blowing, Alenka opted to use a static line technique—tying the parachute’s opening cord to an anchor on the rock. Static line jumping is generally considered a safer method, especially in windy conditions.

The Jump and Unexpected Turns

Alenka suggested a two-way jump with a friend, ensuring that both parachutes would deploy without risking a collision. As they counted down and leaped off the cliff, Alenka experienced a sudden and severe 180-degree line twist, causing her to face the cliff directly. The turbulence left her unable to control her descent effectively, which led to a dangerous encounter with the rock face below.

Facing Impact

In a matter of seconds, Alenka collided with the wall, an impact that left her with a sense of impending doom. A chaotic sequence unfolded as she struggled to regain control of her parachute while sliding down the cliff face. Within those crucial moments, she was acutely aware of her vulnerability, with nothing but hundreds of meters of air beneath her. Just when it seemed like all was lost, her parachute snagged on a tree, leaving her suspended with no immediate way to secure herself.

Desperate for Rescue

Alenka’s initial panic soon turned into a grim realization of her precarious situation. Hanging in mid-air, she felt the pressure of her body against the harness on one leg and the creeping onset of suspension trauma. The situation forced her into survival mode as she fought to concentrate on her breathing and maintain control over her thoughts while awaiting rescue. After calling her boyfriend for help, the minutes turned into what felt like hours, heightening her anxiety as she dangled above the abyss.

The Rescue Efforts

Despite the urgency of her plight, rescuers faced challenges reaching her. Alenka could hear calls for help from above and caught sight of emergency crews, including police and firefighters, who were coordinating a rescue from the ground. The psychological strain and physical discomfort of hanging in one position took a toll on her body as the pain in her knee intensified, yet she focused on conserving energy, reminding herself to remain steady and hopeful.

A Moment of Relief

Finally, after four long hours, Alenka heard a familiar voice among the rescue team. James, a member of the Search and Rescue (SAR) unit and a friend of her father, was there to help her. As he secured her with a harness, Alenka felt a wave of relief wash over her. Despite enduring both physical pain and emotional distress, she managed to emerge from the incident with only a bruised knee. Reflecting on the experience, Alenka attested to the uncertainty of her survival, attributing it to a higher purpose and a renewed appreciation for the sport—underscoring the importance of BASE jumping safety and careful preparation.

For those interested in the thrill of adventure sports like BASE jumping, it is crucial to prioritize safety measures and equipment handling. Stories like Alenka’s serve as reminders that even experienced athletes are not immune to the unforeseen challenges that arise in extreme sports.
