President Biden Establishes New National Monuments in California

On January 7, President Biden announced the creation of two new national monuments in California: Chuckwalla National Monument and Sáttítla Highlands National Monument. These newly designated areas encompass a staggering 848,000 acres of land and are recognized for their profound cultural and historical significance to various Indigenous groups in the region.

According to a statement from the Biden administration, the primary goals of establishing these monuments are to “protect clean water for communities, honor areas of cultural significance to Tribal Nations and Indigenous peoples, and enhance access to nature.” This designation is significant as it forbids new oil and gas drilling and other forms of development, while preserving outdoor recreational opportunities and ecologically vital landscapes.

Chuckwalla National Monument spans approximately 624,000 acres, located at the intersection of the Colorado and Mojave deserts, south of Joshua Tree National Park. The Bureau of Land Management will oversee this new monument, which has already been a favored spot for outdoor activities, including hiking and camping, particularly at destinations like Painted Canyon and Box Canyon. This area is crucial as it also extends the Mojave to Moab Conservation Corridor, the largest protected habitat corridor in the continental United States, ensuring the conservation of over 50 rare or threatened species.

The Fort Yuma Quechan Tribe expressed gratitude for the Chuckwalla National Monument designation, stating, “The protection of the Chuckwalla National Monument brings the Quechan people an overwhelming sense of peace and joy.” The tribe has long advocated for this designation, highlighting the importance of reconnecting Indigenous peoples with their ancestral lands. They also call for a co-management arrangement that would enable tribal leadership to collaborate with federal officials, akin to the framework seen at Bears Ears National Monument.

In addition to the Chuckwalla National Monument, the Sáttítla Highlands National Monument covers approximately 224,000 acres across parts of Klamath, Modoc, and Shasta-Trinity National Forests in northern California. This area is rich in cultural history as it includes the sacred ancestral lands of the Pit River Tribe and Modoc peoples. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and camping, highlighted by the prominent Medicine Lake Volcano, a dormant volcano standing at 7,921 feet.

The new monument contributes to the conservation of significant wildlife habitat and vital underwater aquifers that support local communities. As interest in protecting nature grows, areas like the Sáttítla Highlands serve an essential role in preserving vulnerable plant and animal species. The Biden administration’s commitment to such designations aligns with broader initiatives that have sought to enhance protections across U.S. lands.

These significant announcements came closely on the heels of the Biden administration’s decision to prohibit new drilling along the Atlantic coast and parts of the Gulf of Mexico and Bering Sea. Over his presidency, Biden has designated or expanded 15 national monuments and several national wildlife refuges, cumulatively protecting 670 million acres of U.S. lands and waters. The administration has exemplified a consistent approach to engaging tribal partners, prioritizing their voices in the planning and management of these crucial protected areas.

As the Biden administration forges ahead with its environmental initiatives, the establishment of national monuments like Chuckwalla and Sáttítla Highlands not only reflects an understanding of the importance of conserving nature but also acknowledges the rich cultural heritage of Indigenous communities. The ongoing dialogue around co-management structures indicates a growing recognition of the need for collaboration in environmental stewardship, ensuring that future generations can enjoy and benefit from these diverse landscapes.
