The Black Canyon Ultras: A Premier Ultra Running Event in Arizona

The Black Canyon Ultras, organized by Hoka, is an esteemed ultra running event that takes place in Mayer, Arizona. Set against the stunning backdrop of the non-motorized Black Canyon Trail, the course features an eclectic mix of single track, jeep roads, and historic remnants of old stagecoach routes. This annual event draws runners from across the nation and beyond, eager to participate in two main races: the flagship 100km event on Saturday, February 8, and the shorter 50km race on Sunday, February 9.

Golden Ticket Opportunity at the 100km Race

This year’s 100km race will not only test the endurance of its participants but also provide an opportunity for qualifying slots, known as “Golden Tickets,” for the prestigious Western States Endurance Run in 2025. The top three finishers in both the men’s and women’s categories will earn invitations to compete in the renowned Western States event. Should any of the top three already possess an entry or decline, the invitation will be extended down the ranks to as low as sixth place. This format adds a compelling layer of strategy and competitiveness to the event.

Track Your Favorite Runners

For those unable to attend in person, the Black Canyon Ultras offer a way to follow the action from afar. The 100km race kicks off at Mayer High School at 7:00 am (MST), with subsequent waves starting shortly after. The 50km event will begin the following day with two waves at 7:00 am and 7:15 am. Interested spectators can track their favorite runners live through the event’s designated tracking links for both the 100km and 50km races. Live streaming of the 100km race, including the much-anticipated Golden Ticket competition, adds an engaging visual element for fans and family.

Exploring the Route: A Historic Challenge

The 100km route offers more than just a challenging race; it showcases the profound history of the area. Starting from Mayer High School, runners traverse a path once used by prehistoric Native Americans. The course entails a total elevation gain of 1,580m, making it a net downhill race overall. However, the second half of the race poses a tougher challenge than the first. Participants will experience breathtaking views as they cross through Black Canyon and the Agua Fria River while paralleling the old Black Canyon stagecoach track. The course is equipped with ten aid stations to assist runners, ensuring they are well-supported throughout the distance.

Runners to Watch: Notable Contenders

This year’s race is expected to be highly competitive, with many renowned athletes participating. Among the women, North American runners will be prominent, alongside China’s Lin Chen, who comes fresh off a fourth-place finish at UTMB. Abby Hall, on the path to recovery from injury, is expected to make her mark as well. For the men’s race, Eli Hemming, last year’s course record holder at the 60km distance, has returned to take on the full 100km challenge, adding a layer of excitement among fans. Another athlete gaining attention is Blake Stattengren, who narrowly missed an automatic bid for Western States last year and looks to redeem himself at this event.

Weather and Course Conditions: Perfect Timing for Record Attempts

As the race weekend approaches, favorable weather conditions are being forecasted, raising hopes for new record times. Over the past few years, course records have been repeatedly challenged, and with a strong field of competitors this year, it seems likely that the current benchmarks could be in jeopardy. Hayden Hawks holds the men’s record at 7:30:18, while Keely Henninger’s time of 8:45:30 stands strong for the women’s course. Participants and spectators alike are eager to see if these records will hold or fall under the pressures of top-tier competition.

Conclusion: The Black Canyon Ultras as a Test of Endurance

The Black Canyon Ultras represent more than just a test of physical endurance; they encapsulate the spirit of trail running. With its scenic beauty, historic significance, and a mix of elite and emerging talents, this weekend promises to deliver an unforgettable experience for both runners and onlookers. Those interested in engaging with the event can find more information and resources at Aravaipa Running. Whether aiming for a Golden Ticket or simply enjoying the challenges of ultra running, participants are set to make lasting memories in Mayer, Arizona.
