Imagine navigating a challenging 100-kilometre trail race through the rugged landscape of northern Wales. If that sounds daunting, consider this: what if you also had a six-month-old baby? Meet Stephanie Case, a Canadian ultrarunner who accomplished just that at the Ultra-Trail Snowdonia on May 17, 2025. Not only did she finish the race, but she also placed first among women with an impressive time of 16:53:22.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that throughout the race, Case paused to breastfeed her daughter, Pepper, at designated aid stations, gaining international attention for her inspiring photos shared on social media.

After stepping away from competitive racing for three years, Case’s journey back to the sport was filled with apprehensions. Starting her race 30 minutes behind the elite runners, she astonished herself with her winning time. “I couldn’t believe it,” Case shared. “I had to ask the race organizers about 10 times if I had really won.”

A Journey Filled with Challenges

Case initially viewed the Ultra-Trail Snowdonia as a training opportunity for the more demanding Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run, an approximately 100-mile race set for July in Colorado. Following a lengthy hiatus from competition, she was uncertain how her body would handle the long-distance challenge and whether she would conquer her anxiety about returning to racing.

With 17 hours to run, it would also be the longest she had been away from her daughter. However, her family played a critical role in managing the logistics of breastfeeding within the demanding race structure.

Navigating Breastfeeding During an Ultramarathon

The event featured seven checkpoints where runners could hydrate and refuel. At the 20-kilometre and 80-kilometre stations, Case’s partner, John, provided support and assistance with their baby. Additionally, Case sought permission to breastfeed at the 50-kilometre mark, despite not receiving aid at that station.

“The 50-kilometre checkpoint was the most challenging,” Case explained. “I received no help with my food or water due to the race rules.” Despite these hurdles, she credited the volunteers for their unwavering support.

Finding Balance Between Motherhood and Racing

Case spoke candidly about the emotional transition between racing and motherhood. “I purposely avoided keeping track of my race position because I didn’t want to rush through those moments with Pepper,” she said. “It was tough to leave her at each checkpoint, particularly when she seemed to crave a cuddle.”

In a reflective moment on her Instagram, Case emphasized that there shouldn’t be a notion of “comeback” after childbirth; rather, it’s about entering a new phase. She articulated the challenges faced in her journey after being away from competitive racing while dealing with fertility struggles.

The Struggles of Infertility and a New Identity

Case previously had to confront her own experiences with infertility, including multiple miscarriages and IVF setbacks. “I found it difficult to enjoy running during this phase; the stigma surrounding infertility weighed heavily on me,” she confessed.

After welcoming her daughter, Case faced additional hurdles in rediscovering her passion for running. “Postpartum, I was eager to reconnect with the part of my identity that is intrinsically tied to being a runner,” she shared.

Societal Expectations and Support for New Moms

As Case’s story continues to gain traction, she hopes her experience encourages new moms to pursue their passions without the burden of judgment. “It’s essential for new mothers to navigate their paths without the pressure of societal expectations,” she pointed out.

While many applaud her accomplishments, there are voices of caution. Some women worry that such stories may set unrealistic standards. Case acknowledges this, understanding that the journey is not the same for all. “It takes effort just to maintain mental balance as a new mom, and we need to offer better support for women, allowing them to decide what being a mom looks like for them,” she concluded.

Empowering New Moms

Ultimately, Stephanie Case’s extraordinary journey through trail running and motherhood serves as an inspiration to many. Her resilience illustrates a broader narrative about the importance of self-care, personal goals, and the need for supportive environments for new mothers. As more stories like hers emerge, the hope is to create a culture where women feel free to explore their roles, both as mothers and as individuals.
