British ultra-runner Damian Hall is poised to challenge the course record at the Northern Traverse as he seeks to defend his title in this demanding coast-to-coast event.

Despite not participating in this year’s Barkley Marathons, Hall came close to joining the ranks of finishers alongside Jasmin Paris earlier this year, highlighting his growing reputation in the ultra-running community.

This weekend, Hall will tackle the challenging, non-stop 300km endurance race, traversing three iconic National Parks: the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and North Yorkshire Moors. This incredible challenge not only tests the physical limits of runners but also showcases the natural beauty of the British landscape.

Challenging the Record

Hall currently holds the coast-to-coast record, which he set in 2021 with a remarkable time of 39 hours, 18 minutes, and 40 seconds on the Wainwright route. This achievement at the age of 45 broke a longstanding record that had endured for three decades. As he gears up for the Northern Traverse, all eyes will be on him to see if he can surpass the existing course record of 44 hours and 24 minutes, held by Kim Collison.

With favorable dry weather conditions leading into the event, Hall’s opportunity to set a new record looks promising. He is not alone in his quest; Lianne van Dijk will also compete after narrowly missing out on a podium finish in the women’s race last year, indicating a fierce competition ahead.

An Increasingly Popular Event

The Northern Traverse continues to grow in popularity, with this year’s turnout doubling in comparison to 2024. This sold-out event sees participants tackling the grueling ultra from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay, with additional races such as the Lakes Traverse, Dales Traverse, and Moors Traverse seeing similar rises in participation.

In the Lakes Traverse, Hannah Rickman, the first female finisher of last year’s Northern Traverse, is set to compete, promising a thrilling contest. Additionally, David Parrish, who secured second place for males last year, is also targeting a new course record, adding to the competitive atmosphere.

Potential for New Records

Brian Sharp, aiming to make amends after an injury forced his withdrawal last year, returns with renewed determination. The growing competitiveness among the participants suggests that more records could be broken during the event. Each runner brings their unique strengths and experiences to the table, making this year’s race one to watch.

Anticipating an Electric Atmosphere

Shane Ohly, founder of Ourea Events, has highlighted the increasing excitement surrounding the Northern Traverse. With the number of entrants rising significantly, he noted that this edition promises to be the most thrilling yet, showcasing the enduring appeal of ultra-running challenges. The atmosphere is expected to be electric, with passionate runners conquering the 300km path through the stunning English countryside.

In addition to the extensive Northern Traverse route, the Dales Traverse and Moors Traverse are also back for their second year, featuring earlier successful routes that challenge athletes in their own right. The Dales Traverse, covering 55km from Kirkby Stephen to Richmond, gains significant elevation through beautiful landscapes, while the Moors Traverse offers a remarkable 80km journey through the North York Moors National Park.

As the event draws closer, anticipation continues to build for both participants and spectators alike. The Northern Traverse not only encompasses the spirit of adventure and endurance but also highlights the beauty of nature, making it a significant event for ultra-runner enthusiasts. Can Damian Hall clinch another victory and set a new record? Only time will tell.
