In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting inclusivity in virtual environments, Grammy-nominated recording artist Fat Joe and Paralympic athlete Blake Leeper are set to join Degree® Deodorant in hosting the world’s first marathon in the Metaverse, dubbed the Degree® Metathon™. This unique event marks a significant step toward addressing the current gaps in accessibility and representation within virtual worlds, as a recent survey indicates that 60% of participants feel these spaces fall short in terms of inclusivity.
The Metaverse is often hailed as a revolutionary platform, one that allows individuals to transcend physical limitations and societal stereotypes. However, with the ongoing development of this new frontier, the need for inclusive practices has never been more critical. To tackle this issue, Degree® has partnered with Decentraland to better understand and respond to the challenges faced by underrepresented groups in these digital spaces. The Degree® Metathon™ is scheduled to take place on April 26, 2022, at 6 p.m. EDT, inviting participants from around the globe to engage in a virtual marathon that spans 26.2 miles.
A key element of the event is the creation of a more inclusive avatar library, developed in collaboration with Decentraland. This new library introduces wearables such as prostheses and running blades, allowing participants with disabilities to represent their identities more accurately in the Metaverse. The marathon course will traverse some of the most iconic locations within Decentraland’s Vegas City Sports Quarter, incorporating accessible architecture to ensure a welcoming atmosphere for all runners, regardless of their physical abilities.
Blake Leeper, an eight-time Paralympic medalist, expressed his enthusiasm for the event by stating, “As a person with disabilities and a professional runner, I am excited to take part in the Degree® Metathon™. Showing people in the virtual world who are running with blades and other prostheses will inspire confidence in individuals with disabilities, allowing them to feel welcome in this experience.” Leeper’s advocacy highlights the importance of visibility and representation in promoting wider participation among individuals with disabilities.
Fat Joe, known for both his musical talent and community advocacy, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in the Metaverse. “As the metaverse continues to evolve, it’s imperative that this virtual world reflects the diversity of our real communities,” he remarked. His involvement in the Degree® Metathon™ underscores the event’s commitment to ensuring that various body types, cultures, and physical abilities are recognized and celebrated.
In addition to the Metathon™, Degree® is committed to long-term advocacy through its Breaking Limits Program. This five-year initiative, backed by a $5 million funding commitment, aims to break down barriers to movement for youth facing obstacles related to race, gender, disabilities, and financial limitations. The program seeks to provide access to sports coaching and safe spaces, furthering the brand’s mission to empower young individuals to transform their lives through movement.
The Degree® Metathon™ serves as an invitation for people of all backgrounds to participate in the growing digital landscape of the Metaverse and challenge the status quo of representation within these spaces. For those interested in joining this transformative event, registration is available on the Decentraland Events Page. As we chart a new course for inclusivity in the virtual realm, the Degree® Metathon™ stands as a bold statement of commitment to equality and representation.
