The highly anticipated United Airlines NYC Half Marathon makes its grand comeback on Sunday, March 23, 2025, with an exciting new route transitioning from Brooklyn to Manhattan. This year’s race is set to include over 27,000 participants, marking a significant resurgence in marathon events post-pandemic.

For the first time, the course will traverse the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, offering runners an unparalleled view of New York City’s skyline. Organizers are eager to showcase this new format and expect a vibrant atmosphere filled with cheers and support along the route. As the race day approaches, it’s essential for participants and spectators alike to be aware of race timings and street closures throughout the city.

Race Schedule: Start Times and Key Milestones

The race day will kick off with the initial wave of runners departing at approximately 7 a.m., followed by subsequent waves continuing throughout the morning. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Wave 1: Arrive by 6:10 a.m., start at 7:20 a.m.
  • Wave 2: Arrive by 6:40 a.m., start at 7:50 a.m.
  • Wave 3: Arrive by 7:10 a.m., start at 8:20 a.m.
  • Wave 4: Arrive by 7:40 a.m., start at 8:50 a.m.
  • Wave 5: Arrive by 8:10 a.m., start at 9:20 a.m.

All runners must adhere to specific cutoff times: reach the Brooklyn Bridge by 11 a.m., enter the FDR Drive by 11:30 a.m., and finish the race before the 2 p.m. closure, which is about 4.5 hours post-start.

NYC Half Marathon Route Overview

Covering a total distance of 13.1 miles, the course begins at Washington Avenue near the Brooklyn Museum in Prospect Park and winds its way through several key neighborhoods before culminating in Central Park. Runners will head up Flatbush Avenue, cross the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan, and travel along the FDR Drive. The route navigates through the heart of Manhattan, including a run through the vibrant Times Square before finishing at Central Park West, situated between West 67th and 68th Streets.

Family reunification will be arranged on Central Park West, between West 63rd and 64th Streets, where spectators can meet runners post-race. Screening for spectators will occur at West 64th Street and Broadway, ensuring a smooth flow as the event unfolds.

Tracking Runners and Event Results

Family and friends will have the opportunity to track their participating runners in real-time using the New York Road Runners (NYRR) app. Available for both Apple and Android devices, this free app offers course maps, runner checklists, and essential race day information. Participants’ results will be made available on the official NYRR website following the conclusion of the event.

Street Closures to Note

In preparation for the marathon, various street closures will be in effect across Brooklyn and Manhattan. Notable closures include:

  • Eastern Parkway from Grand Army Plaza to Bedford Ave (12:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.)
  • Washington Ave from Eastern Parkway to Empire Blvd (12:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)
  • FDR Drive from Brooklyn Bridge to 62nd St (5:40 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.)
  • 42nd St from 1st Ave to 7th Ave (7:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.)
  • Central Park South from Columbus Circle to Grand Army Plaza (7:15 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.)

With limited accessibility to many streets, commuters are advised to plan their routes accordingly and expect potential delays due to the event.

Plan Your Experience: Access and Parking

To facilitate easy access to the starting area, two security checkpoints will be set up on Eastern Parkway near Washington and Classon avenues. Participants who wish to check bags should utilize the 2/3/4 train station at Franklin Avenue, while those without bags can enter through the 2/3/4 station on Eastern Parkway. Vehicle drop-off is designated at Bedford Avenue and Eastern Parkway.

As the NYC Half Marathon returns in 2025, it’s primed to be an exciting and memorable event for runners and NYC residents alike. Be sure to check official results and updates as the race day approaches.
