Exploring Marathon, Florida: A Blend of Nature, Culture, and History

Located in the stunning Middle Florida Keys, Marathon is a vibrant community celebrated for its rich wildlife rehabilitation facilities, colorful performance theater, and an array of comfortable accommodations. From luxury resorts and cozy inns to RV parks, marinas, and casual dining, this region offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure for all visitors.

The Allure of Crane Point Hammock

One of the crown jewels of Marathon is the Crane Point Hammock Museum & Nature Trail, a 63.5-acre sanctuary recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nestled at 5550 Overseas Highway (mile marker 50.5), this site not only boasts a lush natural landscape but also serves as an important archaeological venue, featuring prehistoric Indian artifacts and remnants of a Bahamian village. The historic Adderly House, built in 1904, stands as the oldest house in the Keys outside of Key West and is also on the National Register, showcasing the area’s rich cultural heritage.

Wildlife Rehabilitation at Marathon Wild Bird Center

The Marathon Wild Bird Center is another essential stop within the Crane Point ecosystem. This dedicated facility has played a significant role in rescuing over 22,000 wild birds, including hawks, ospreys, spoonbills, and egrets. With the help of local veterinarians and passionate volunteers, injured birds are rehabilitated and eventually released back into their natural habitats. By visiting this center, not only do guests enjoy the experience, but they also contribute to its mission by donating supplies needed for bird care.

Arts and Entertainment at Marathon Community Theatre

For those seeking cultural engagement during their stay, the Marathon Community Theatre offers an exciting array of performances. Since its inception in 1944, the theater has transformed into a local hub for creativity, presenting numerous shows that capture the talents of local residents. Visitors can enjoy comedies, musicals, and dramatic productions typically staged between October and April. One of the highlights this season is “The Rocky Horror Show,” premiereing on October 27.

Outdoor Activities Along the Historic Old Seven Mile Bridge

A must-see for all visitors is the Old Seven Mile Bridge. This iconic structure, originally a central part of the Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad, invites guests to walk, bike, or run along its 2.2-mile expanse while taking in spectacular views of the surrounding marine life and stunning sunrises and sunsets. After a multi-year restoration, this linear park reopened for pedestrian recreation in January 2022 and serves as a gateway to the historic Pigeon Key.

Discover the History of Pigeon Key

Situated just beneath the Old Seven Mile Bridge, Pigeon Key offers a unique glimpse into history. Once a labor camp for workers constructing the Old Seven Mile Bridge, Pigeon Key now features a museum and opportunities for picnicking and snorkeling. Visitors can easily access the island via the bridge or a newly launched visitor tram that resembles a train. Daily tours provide insights into the island’s intricate history while hosting a marine science research program for children.

Cultural Shopping at Shady Palm Art Gallery

Another local treasure is the Shady Palm Art Gallery & Photography. Located at 2888 Overseas Highway, this gallery showcases the creative works of over 50 local artists. With a range of products, including paintings, jewelry, pottery, and woodwork, it serves as an ideal spot for visitors to acquire unique souvenirs to remember their Marathon experience. Every item tells a story and reflects the vibrant culture of the Florida Keys.

Plan Your Adventure in Marathon and the Middle Keys

Marathon is a destination that encapsulates the beauty, culture, and history of the Florida Keys. With an array of attractions, from nature trails and wildlife centers to theaters and art galleries, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
