Early Bird Registration Opens for 2026 Pyongyang International Marathon

The 2026 Pyongyang International Marathon is set to become a highlight for adventurous travelers and running enthusiasts alike, marking one of the few opportunities to experience the reclusive nation of North Korea. Organized by Koryo Tours, a travel company specializing in North Korean tours, registration has officially opened with a 50% early bird discount available for those who sign up before September 1, 2025. Scheduled for April 2026, this event offers not just an athletic challenge, but also a unique cultural experience that runners from across the globe will not want to miss.

Event Overview

The marathon will be held on April 5, 2026, with final details to be confirmed closer to the date. Participants will have a choice of several race categories: the full marathon (42.195 km), half marathon (21 km), 10 km, and 5 km. Each race is designed to take runners through major landmarks in Pyongyang, including the prestigious Arch of Triumph and Kim Il-sung Square, providing a glimpse into the fascinating architecture and atmosphere of the capital city.

Exploring the Route

The races will start and finish at the iconic Kim Il-sung Stadium, a venue that has hosted many significant sporting events. More than just a physical test, the marathon route offers insights into the daily life of Pyongyang residents, making it a rare and enriching experience for international visitors. Participants in this event will be able to witness North Korean culture in ways that are seldom available to outsiders.

Registration and Discounts

For those eager to take part, Koryo Tours is offering an appealing early bird discount of 50% off registration fees for sign-ups before September 1, 2025. Previous event fees ranged between US$70 and $150 based on the race length, and while exact fees for 2026 are yet to be released, this discount will significantly lower costs for participants. The registration fee includes comprehensive travel packages that cover flights, accommodations, and guided tours, ensuring that participants have a hassle-free experience in North Korea.

The Comeback of the Marathon

The 2026 edition will be particularly significant, as it marks the second running of the Pyongyang International Marathon since the COVID-19 pandemic halted international tourism in 2020. The 2025 event saw a strong turnout with over 500 international participants representing 40 countries. The marathon encapsulates not just the spirit of sport but also a rare occasion for cultural exchange and firsthand experience of life in one of the world’s most isolated countries.

Race Categories and Cultural Experience

The marathon distinguishes itself by offering multiple race categories, including a full marathon, half marathon, 10 km, and 5 km. The courses showcase famous landmarks such as the Chollima Statue and the Juche Tower, with a flat route that appeals to both serious competitors and novice runners alike. This event is a unique opportunity for participants to engage with local runners, fostering cross-cultural connections in a typically closed-off environment.

Travel and Visa Regulations

All travel arrangements, including visas, flights, and accommodations, will be managed by Koryo Tours. Obtaining a visa for North Korea is essential; however, Koryo Tours will assist participants through this process. It’s important for potential visitors to check any current travel advisories concerning North Korea, as regulations remain stringent and only organized group tours are allowed.

Your Chance to Experience North Korea

The 2026 Pyongyang International Marathon presents an unparalleled chance to run in a globally recognized event within a nation rich in history and culture. This marathon is not just about competing; it’s about exploring a country that few have the chance to visit. With Koryo Tours’ early bird registration, now is the time to secure a spot in this extraordinary marathon.

Conclusion: Seize the Opportunity

If you’ve ever dreamt of running in a marathon that offers more than just a race, the Pyongyang International Marathon could be your perfect adventure. Experienced athletes, casual runners, and cultural enthusiasts alike will find this event to be an unforgettable experience. Don’t miss the chance to register, participate, and witness the captivating essence of North Korea.
