Two Oceans Ultra Marathon: A Race for a Cause

The Two Oceans Ultra Marathon is set against the stunning backdrop of Cape Town’s rugged peninsula, making it one of South Africa’s most prestigious sporting events. Spanning an impressive 56 kilometers, this marathon will take place on the weekend of April 5, 2025, marking its 54th edition. Alongside the ultra-marathon, participants can also take part in a half-marathon and various trail races, drawing thousands of athletes—both professional and amateur alike— eager for a challenge.

A Life-Changing Mission

This year, participants will not only be testing their physical limits but also making a significant impact on the lives of others. Jaco van Schalkwyk, Founder and Director of The Character Company (TCC), is running the half-marathon to support 33 fatherless boys from one of South Africa’s most dangerous communities. His goal? To show these boys they are worth the investment of time and effort, symbolized by running the full 21 kilometers.

Building a Future for Fatherless Boys

Van Schalkwyk’s mission goes beyond merely completing the race; he aims to raise R118,800 to support the boys enrolled in TCC’s program. While the organization asks single mothers to contribute R300 per month, many struggle to afford this fee. Van Schalkwyk believes that by raising R300 for each boy, he can facilitate access to their MENtors and nature-based activities that are crucial for their development. He emphasized, “I want them to know that they are worth fighting for.”

The Impact of Absentee Fathers

According to the State of South Africa’s Fathers 2024 report, only 35.6% of children in South Africa live with their biological fathers. This lack of engaged parental figures can be detrimental, particularly for boys who depend on male role models to forge their identities and build self-esteem. Without this guidance, fatherless boys may face a host of challenges, from poor academic performance to mental health issues.

TCC’s Approach to Mentorship

To fill the void left by absent fathers, TCC provides mentorship through vetted social fathers. This program offers boys the opportunity to engage in a values-based curriculum focused on respect, self-discipline, courage, honesty, and kindness. Van Schalkwyk highlights that TCC aims to instill resilience and emotional strength in these boys, which is particularly crucial for developing healthy coping mechanisms. “By taking on this Two Oceans challenge, I want to show them that we can all make choices that change our path for the better,” he stated.

Get Involved: Support the Cause

Van Schalkwyk cannot accomplish this mission alone. He invites the community to support his Two Oceans half-marathon run and contribute to the future of these young boys in need of guidance and encouragement. Donations can be made through the BackaBuddy campaign, where every bit helps in making a meaningful difference.

A Call to Action

The Two Oceans Ultra Marathon is not just a race; it is an opportunity to bring attention to the crucial issue of fatherlessness in South Africa. By participating or supporting those like Jaco van Schalkwyk, you can contribute to changing lives and offering hope to boys who are yearning for a positive role model. As the marathon approaches, let us rally together and show that in the face of adversity, we can stand up for those who need it most.
