ESPN and Disney Launch ‘Fifty/50’ Initiative to Celebrate Women’s Sports

ORLANDO, Florida — In a vibrant and empowering display, ESPN marked the unofficial kickoff of its Fifty/50 initiative during the 2021 Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend, held at the Walt Disney World Resort to celebrate its 50th anniversary on February 27. This monumental event featured 50 female runners, each with unique stories, who came together to celebrate and highlight the initiative that champions women’s rights in sports.

The Fifty/50 initiative represents a groundbreaking collaboration between ESPN and The Walt Disney Company, aimed at emphasizing the civil rights journey of women across the sports and cultural landscape. Importantly, it commemorates the 50th anniversary of Title IX, a federal civil rights law enacted to eliminate sex-based discrimination in educational institutions that receive federal funding. This law has paved the way for women to gain equal opportunities in athletics and beyond.

The official launch of the initiative aligns with International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month in March, highlighting the ongoing struggles and achievements of women in various fields. Debra O’Connell, President of Networks for Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, expressed the significance of this collaboration, stating, “Fifty/50 is a significant initiative for The Walt Disney Company and its affiliates; the breadth of content is a reflection of the progress that has occurred over the last 50 years and how much more is still to be done.” This statement underscores the importance of recognizing both past milestones and present challenges in the pursuit of gender equality.

Throughout June 2022, the Fifty/50 initiative will present an array of content and experiences focusing on stories that intertwine women, sports, culture, and the ongoing fight for equality. Notable highlights include the four-part documentary series “37 Words,” directed by acclaimed filmmakers Dawn Porter and Nicole Newnham, which chronicles the struggles for equal rights in education and athletics. Additionally, “Dream On,” directed by Kristen Lappas, will shed light on the groundbreaking achievements of the 1996 United States Women’s Olympic basketball team.

The initiative will also feature the “Fifty/50 Shorts,” a collection of five short films showcasing diverse narratives of women in sports, all created by women directors and producers in partnership with W. Studios and Google. Additionally, ABC Owned Television Stations are set to air 50 inspiring stories celebrating courageous women pioneers who have broken barriers stemming from the landmark 37-word Title IX law.

These heartwarming stories will be broadcast across ABC-owned stations including ABC7/WABC-TV New York and ABC7/KABC-TV Los Angeles, with premieres scheduled starting on March 17 and additional features on April 14 and May 12. In a further commitment to representation, ABC Owned Television Stations’ Race and Culture Content Team will present “Our America: Fifty/50,” spotlighting eight short documentaries that profile young women and girls involved with the Women Sports Foundation and espnW’s Sports 4 Life Program, all dedicated to leveling the playing field through athletics and activism.

Concluding this grand initiative will be a culminating 90-minute documentary airing on the 50th anniversary of Title IX, June 23, across ABC Owned Television Stations’ linear broadcast services, connected TV apps, Localish Network on Hulu, and ESPN+ platforms. Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman of ESPN and Sports Content, expressed enthusiasm for the Fifty/50 initiative, emphasizing the importance of creative approaches to celebrate Title IX’s milestones across various platforms while ensuring the stories of female athletes and behind-the-camera talents receive the recognition they deserve.

The Fifty/50 initiative is proudly presented by Champion and Google, with additional content and experiences expected throughout June in a multitude of formats including long-form reporting, documentaries, podcasts, digital content, and more from The Walt Disney Company. This initiative represents a significant step forward in the ongoing quest for gender equality in sports and culture, and further details will be released in the coming months.
