Everything You Need to Know About the 2025 London Marathon

The 2025 London Marathon is set for Sunday, April 27, 2025. As one of the most prestigious marathons globally, it draws elite athletes and spectators alike. Here’s how you can catch all the action live, what to expect, and why this year’s race is particularly noteworthy.

Race Schedule and Coverage

The marathon will kick off with the elite wheelchair race starting at 8:50 a.m. BST, followed by the elite women’s race at 9:05 a.m. BST, and finally, the elite men’s and mass start at 9:35 a.m. BST. For those wishing to tune in, live coverage will begin on BBC One at 8:30 a.m. BST, concluding at 2:00 p.m. BST before switching to BBC Two.

If you’re outside the UK, several broadcasters will carry the event, including FloTrack in Australia, Canada, and the USA, and Eurosport across Pan Europe. Online viewers can also watch via BBC iPlayer or the BBC Sport app.

Tracking Participants

Interested in following a specific runner? The official marathon website will facilitate individual tracking. Fans can search for their favorite athletes and view their finishing results and splits after the race concludes.

The Iconic London Marathon Course

The marathon route hasn’t significantly changed since its inception in 1981. Starting from Greenwich Park and concluding near Buckingham Palace, runners will traverse a beautiful course that includes landmarks such as the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, and Big Ben. The relatively flat profile of the course is well-regarded for producing fast times.

Weather Forecast

The weather on race day is expected to be changeable with a predicted range of 46°F to 68°F. With previous reports indicating an unusually warm and dry early April, runners will face a typical spring marathon climate, which is often ideal for long-distance racing.

Prize Money Distribution

In a commitment to equality, the London Marathon awards the same prize money to male and female athletes across all divisions. Each division boasts total prize money of $308,000, with top positions earning significant cash rewards, ranging from $55,000 for first place down to $22,500 for third place. Additional bonuses are also available for breaking time barriers — $150,000 for men under 2:02 and women under 2:15, alongside $125,000 for world records and $25,000 for course records.

Notable Athletes to Watch

The Women’s Elite Field

This year’s event boasts what many believe is the strongest women’s field in marathon history. Top competitors include Tigst Assefa, the former world record holder, who will aim for redemption after a second-place finish last year. Her experience and strategic racing will be crucial in a packed field of elite athletes.

The Men’s Elite Start List

On the men’s side, Eliud Kipchoge, a legendary figure in marathon running, is aiming for a record fifth victory. Kipchoge’s recent challenges, including an unexpected withdrawal from the last Olympics, will make his upcoming performance highly scrutinized. Additionally, reigning champion Alexander Mutiso is back to defend his title, eyeing a course record as he continues to build on his previous successes.

Emerging Talents

New faces will also make an impact in 2025, with Jacob Kiplimo, the world record holder in the half marathon, making his much-anticipated marathon debut. The Ugandan athlete aims to establish himself among the marathon elite from the onset. British triathlon great Alex Yee will also transition to marathon racing, promising an exciting performance as he brings his unique background into the long-distance arena.

Key Storylines to Follow

Redemption for the Elite

Both Assefa and Kipchoge represent compelling narratives. Assefa aims to prove her mettle in strategic racing, while Kipchoge hopes to restore his status after recent setbacks. With a strong field on both the men’s and women’s sides, the race is set to deliver riveting storylines for fans and participants alike.

The Competitive Landscape

The competition promises to be fierce, particularly in the women’s division, where many of the fastest marathon runners aim to break records. The 2025 London Marathon is expected to provide not only an enthralling spectacle for spectators but also crucial points in the careers of many elite athletes.

As race day approaches, it’s clear that the 2025 London Marathon will be a significant event in the marathon calendar, showcasing athleticism, competitive spirit, and the celebration of human endurance. Mark your calendars for April 27, 2025, and get ready to witness an unforgettable race.

For those looking for further details and updates, be sure to keep up with the event through official channels and sports news outlets.
