Explore the Hidden Hot Springs of Colorado

Colorado, known for its breathtaking mountain landscapes and outdoor adventures, is also home to a little-known treasure: its hot springs. From rustic natural tubs nestled in secluded wilderness to upscale spa resorts, these geothermal wonders offer a unique way to experience the state’s stunning scenery. By venturing into the Historic Hot Springs Loop, which will be celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2025, visitors can embark on an unforgettable week-long journey exploring some of the finest hot springs the state has to offer.

A Week-Long Road Trip

This road trip can easily be tailored to fit various schedules, whether you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway or a more extensive week of soaking. Over two years, hot spring enthusiasts have traveled throughout the state, discovering the best spots for relaxation and rejuvenation. Along the way, they’ve compiled an ultimate guide to the best hot springs available, ensuring you make the most of your time soaking in Colorado’s healing waters.

Day 1: Departure from Denver

Kick off your adventure by leaving Denver and heading towards Chaffee County, approximately 128 miles southwest. Enjoy a scenic drive through pine-studded hills along Highway 285, and make a pit stop at the charming town of Bailey, where you can indulge in a delicious Polish hotdog from the local Coney Island hotdog stand. Upon reaching Chaffee County, you’ll find a variety of accommodations, from the luxurious Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort to the rustic charm of Cottonwood Hot Springs.

Day 2: Chaffee to Saguache County

Your second day involves a leisurely 57-mile drive to Saguache County, situated an hour south of Buena Vista. Here, hot springs enthusiasts can discover less-commercialized springs amid the stunning scenery. Consider visiting the Joyful Journey Hot Springs, which offers modern amenities and even a clothing-optional atmosphere, or the more secluded Valley View Hot Springs, known for its serene environment.

Day 3: Saguache County to Pagosa Springs

The journey continues with a picturesque 109-mile drive along Highway 160, leading you to Pagosa Springs. As you travel, take some time to hike to Treasure Falls, a stunning waterfall ideal for photography. Once in Pagosa Springs, visit the renowned Springs Resort & Spa, which features 25 hot spring pools along the banks of the San Juan River. Here, you can relax with multi-faceted wellness options and exquisite dining.

Day 4: Durango Calling

On day four, drive just 69 miles to the vibrant town of Durango. Spend your morning at Two Chicks and a Hippie for breakfast before exploring the nearby Chimney Rock National Monument. After lunch, treat yourself to a stay at the Durango Hot Springs Resort & Spa, which promises rejuvenating spa treatments and breathtaking mountain views, ensuring you enjoy every moment of your time soaking.

The Beauty of Ouray

Day five takes you on a scenic 62-mile drive to Ouray, often dubbed the “Switzerland of America.” Filter your way along the stunning Million Dollar Highway, where breathtaking views and charming mountain towns abound. Take a moment to stop by the Ouray Hot Springs Pool for a relaxing soak. Additional accommodation options, such as Twin Peaks Lodge and Wiesbaden Hot Springs, offer even more amenities for the traveler seeking comfort.

Final Days in Glenwood and Steamboat

Wrapping up your hot springs adventure, day six brings you to Glenwood Springs, home to the world’s largest hot springs pool at the Glenwood Hot Springs Resort. After enjoying the historic ambiance and soothing waters, you can journey to Steamboat Springs for the final leg. Here, indulge in more soaking options at Old Town Hot Springs or seek serenity at Strawberry Park Hot Springs, set in a tranquil forest location.

Conclusion: A Soaking Adventure Awaits

With each stop along the way, hot springs lovers can enjoy unique experiences while soaking in the natural beauty of Colorado. Whether you seek adventure, relaxation, or a mix of both, the array of hot springs in this stunning state will leave you refreshed, rejuvenated, and longing to return. Plan your journey through Colorado’s famous hot springs and discover the healing powers of the earth beneath your feet.
