The Rising Trend of Marathons in China: A Cultural and Economic Boon

Marathons in China have transformed from mere athletic competitions into vibrant travel trends that significantly benefit local economies and enhance cultural experiences for participants and visitors alike. The intersection of sports and tourism has created a unique marketing opportunity for towns and cities hosting these events, stimulating local businesses and showcasing regional attractions.

The Yangshan Half-Marathon: A Case Study

On March 30, 2025, the picturesque town of Yangshan in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, hosted the 2025 Yangshan Half-Marathon, which attracted nearly 12,000 participants. Among them was Wang Junxia, China’s celebrated Olympic long-distance champion, who completed her first marathon since retiring nearly three decades ago. The event took place amidst 1,667 hectares of blooming peach orchards, drawing attention to Yangshan’s reputation as the “home of honey peaches.” Wang expressed her admiration for the scenic beauty, stating, “It’s an exquisite town. You arrive enchanted and leave longing to return.”

Statistics and Economic Impact

The economic repercussions of such marathons are substantial. Last year, Yangshan produced 35,000 tonnes of honey peaches, contributing to an agricultural industry worth over 2 billion yuan (approximately 276 million U.S. dollars). Local runner Lu Xiaowei emphasized the event’s dual purpose: tourists visit during the marathon to enjoy the flowers and often return later in the summer to purchase peaches. This seasonal engagement reinforces the connection between athletics and local commerce.

Cultural Enrichment through Marathons

The positive impact of marathons extends beyond economics. Local government officials, like Yang Yunyan from Yangshan, noted that these events foster a lively community atmosphere by coupling marathons with cultural activities such as food festivals and photography exhibitions. This multi-faceted approach enriches the visitor experience while promoting local heritage and attractions.

The Super Marathon Weekend Phenomenon

With the arrival of spring, China experiences what many call the “Super Marathon Weekend.” Various marathons across the nation take place almost every weekend, infusing local culture into running events. For example, the Hangzhou Marathon features the iconic West Lake, while the Chengdu World Heritage Marathon spotlights the scenic Dujiangyan area. This trend not only promotes healthy lifestyles but also serves as a significant draw for tourism.

Boosting Local Economies

The benefits of marathons are evident in cities like Wuxi, which recently experienced a tourism surge related to its marathon events. In the week surrounding the Wuxi Marathon, over 160 performances and exhibitions were offered, attracting thousands and enhancing tourist experiences. The event reportedly generated 505 million yuan in local consumption—an increase of 78.2 percent year-on-year—largely due to the influx of participants and spectators eager to explore the region.

A Cultural Trend in Running

According to the Chinese Athletics Association, 749 road-running events were hosted in 2024, drawing about 7.05 million participants—an increase of one million from the previous year. Major events, such as the Shanghai Marathon, reported direct economic benefits averaging 419 million yuan. This data suggests that selecting a city to participate in a marathon has become a cultural trend among running enthusiasts, amplifying the importance of delivering engaging experiences for runners.

The Future of Marathons in China

As the marathon scene in China continues to evolve, the focus remains on integrating both athletic excellence and tourism. The success of these events highlights the necessity for host cities to provide exceptional experiences both within and outside the racecourse. As noted by Wang Zongping, a professor at Nanjing University of Science and Technology, the indirect effects of marathons extend far beyond the immediate economic benefits, making them pivotal for local and national culture and commerce.
