Exploring the Eastern States 100 Mile Race: A Journey Through Pennsylvania’s Rugged Beauty

The Eastern States 100 Mile, one of the most challenging ultra-marathons in the United States, takes place every August in the breathtaking landscape of North Central Pennsylvania. This 103-mile race loops around Pine Creek, immersing participants in the natural beauty of the region’s hardwood forests. The course is predominantly composed of rocky singletrack trails that feature over 20,000 feet of elevation gain, all under the stringent 36-hour cutoff time. The event is not just a test of endurance, but also a celebration of responsible trail running, managed by the Eastern States Trail-Endurance Alliance—their mission focuses on the preservation and stewardship of trail systems in this breathtaking wilderness.

Runners in this iconic event not only challenge their physical limits, but they also discover the hidden gems of the trail, particularly the Skytop aid station. Situated at the 85-mile mark, Skytop serves as both a respite and a beacon of encouragement, run by a dedicated group known as the Central Pennsylvania Trail Legends. This aid station, hosted at a private camp owned by the Lister family, is celebrated for its diverse offerings of comforting warm foods, which include fresh blueberry pancakes, cheeseburgers, and chicken soup. Here, weary runners are not simply replenished but are rejuvenated before they tackle the final leg of their journey.

The approach to Skytop is not without its trials. Runners endure two significant climbs—Gillespie and Skytop—each over 1,000 feet, followed by treacherous rocky terrain and stream crossings typical of Pennsylvania’s topography. The final stretch to the aid station is beautifully illuminated by strings of twinkle lights, creating a homecoming atmosphere that makes reaching Skytop an emotional experience for the participants.

Despite the invigorating atmosphere, the final 18 miles following the Skytop aid station are critical and arduous. The terrain remains tough, further complicated by the humid August conditions and the relentless mosquitoes. This intensifies the challenges runners face, yet the skilled volunteers at Skytop ensure that each runner departs with the energy and encouragement needed for the road ahead, reinforcing the community spirit that defines this race.

Over the years, the Eastern States 100 has earned a reputation as one of the most formidable 100-mile races on the East Coast, affectionately dubbed the “Beast Coast.” This notoriety stems not only from the grueling course but also from the warm welcome that the Skytop aid station provides. The combination of support, nourishment, and camaraderie exemplifies the essence of ultra-running, making it a memorable experience for many participants.

Community Involvement and Legacy

The impact of the Eastern States 100 extends beyond the race itself. The Eastern States Trail-Endurance Alliance actively promotes trail running and responsible land use, ensuring that these beautiful areas remain accessible and enjoyable for future generations. They also oversee the maintenance of thousands of miles of trails, fostering a culture that respects nature and the environment.

A Taste of Local Craft Beer

After a long day traversing the challenging landscapes of Pennsylvania, participants might seek to unwind and celebrate their achievements with a local brew. Enter Appalachian Brewing Company, located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, which offers a variety of craft beers. This week’s featured brew is the Jolly Scot Scottish Ale, a delightful traditional ale boasting a robust, nutty flavor with just a hint of sweetness—a perfect companion to close the day after conquering the trails.

Call for Experiences

The Eastern States 100 not only tests physical endurance but also fosters connections among runners, volunteers, and trail enthusiasts. Have you ever visited the Skytop aid station? Share your experiences and insights. Additionally, what is the most remarkable aid station you’ve encountered during your racing adventures? Your stories contribute significantly to the tapestry of this incredible ultra-running community.
