Extreme Runner Russ Cook’s Remarkable Journey Across Africa

Renowned for his extraordinary endurance, British extreme runner Russ Cook, famously nicknamed the ‘Hardest Geezer’, shared insights into his breathtaking journey across Africa. As he prepares to participate in the prestigious London Marathon, Cook’s remarkable achievement of running the length of Africa has drawn significant attention.

His audacious expedition spanned 352 days, culminating just two weeks before the London Marathon. Over this arduous journey, Cook traversed more than 16,000 kilometers, completing the equivalent of 385 marathons. His route extended from the southern tip of South Africa to Tunisia’s northernmost reach, showcasing not only his physical prowess but also his indomitable spirit.



Russ Cook overcame severe weather conditions and dangerous encounters throughout his journey.

During an interview with Alan Brazil and Gabby Agbonlahor on talkSPORT Breakfast, Cook recounted the various challenges he faced. Among the most harrowing experiences was an incident where he and his team were robbed at gunpoint in Angola. Such incidents highlighted the perilous reality of undertaking such a grueling expedition.

Cook’s journey involved not just physical endurance but also a significant adjustment in lifestyle, particularly regarding his dietary habits. He reported consuming an average of 6,000 calories daily to maintain energy levels, a challenge he humorously noted would be difficult now that his training regimen has changed. Much of his diet consisted of products from Huel, a nutrition brand that provided him with easy-to-consume meals, paired with local foods such as rice and cassava.

Despite facing unpredictable dangers from wildlife, particularly snakes, and adverse weather conditions, including oppressive heat and humidity, Cook’s resolve remained unshaken. In fact, he described the climate in central Africa, particularly the Congo region, as “brutal,” with temperatures often soaring between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius and humidity levels at 95%.

Cook’s journey to becoming the first person to run the entire length of Africa was fueled by a desire for adventure and exploration. He reflected on his inspiration, which stemmed from a prior journey from Istanbul to London in 2019. After envisioning the vast and beautiful expanse of Africa, he was determined to turn his dream into reality. This dream took approximately three years to materialize, requiring determination and resources.

As Cook gears up for the upcoming London Marathon, he plans to focus on supporting a group of young runners from The Running Charity, an organization dedicated to helping homeless youth. He expressed excitement about this new venture, emphasizing that his role on race day would be to guide and uplift the young participants in achieving their goals, rather than seeking personal glory.

Looking ahead, Cook hinted at his adventurous spirit continuing, stating, “I’m looking. I think that one’s interesting to me,” referring to the possibility of running the length of another continent, potentially South America. His commitment to pushing boundaries in endurance running remains evident, inspiring numerous individuals with his remarkable feats.
