In today’s fast-paced world, our lives often resemble a chaotic dance of selections: bridging the gap between overwhelming choices and fleeting preferences. With just a swipe or a click, we toggle between numerous stimuli, frequently drowning out the subtle nuances of the world around us. In this symphony of distractions, genuine listening becomes a rarity, and silence—a treasure seldom sought after.
A few weeks ago, I attended an extraordinary snowboarding film by Finlay Woods, titled “The Sound of Japan.” Unlike the multitude of typical ski or snowboard films that saturate the market, this production stood apart, not due to thrilling snowboarding feats but because it utilized snowboarding as a canvas to explore its primary artistic essence: sound.
Generally, sports films embody an adrenaline-fueled soundtrack, bursting with fervor. However, “The Sound of Japan” embraces its titular concept by incorporating an intricate tapestry of sounds sourced from across Japan. Through an artistic synthesis of everyday noises, the filmmakers created a stunning auditory experience that resonated deeply, elevating the film into an auditory masterpiece.
Listening to Our Surroundings
About a week later, I found myself on a journey in Japan, where I consciously focused on the surrounding sounds. The country buzzed with life: the urban hum of electronic notifications, trains rushing through tunnels, and snippets of conversation fluttering in the air. Footsteps resonated on the pavement, tires whispered over asphalt, and in the distance, the sound of noodles being slurped elegantly punctuated the uncontrollable rushes of nature and city life.
As I embarked on numerous runs, each location and moment unveiled its unique melody: the city orchestrated dense, pulsating harmonies, while the soothing embrace of the forest resonated with tranquility. Japan provided a soundtrack without the need for a curated playlist.
Upon returning to the U.S., however, I encountered a contrasting acoustic landscape, characterized by a cacophony of familiar sounds. The incessant background noise of the radio, television, and the hypnotic pull of smartphones filled my space, echoing discussions around politics, trending social media, and sports events. This omnipresent clamor is daunting yet oddly captivating, pulling me into its engaging narratives.
Time to Think
Yet, amidst this sensory overload, I discovered a sanctuary in one activity: running. While sound accompanies each stride—crunching leaves, rustling winds, the gentle flow of rivers, and the honks of geese flying south—the essence of those sounds transformed into a sacred auditory experience that deserves reverence. This time is precious, a moment to reconnect with my thoughts and surroundings, something I hope to preserve.
While many resort to music, podcasts, or audiobooks as training companions, I often choose a different realm. The world is brimming with noisy distractions—life is loud enough as it is, and I cherish the freedom that running gives me to enjoy uninterrupted silence. It’s an invitation for my mind to wander and explore.
Frequently, I receive inquiries: “What thoughts occupy your mind while you run?” Unquestionably, sometimes I dwell on nothing, and at others, my musings are plentiful. Regardless, the essence lies in carving out time for contemplation and listening—elements that are often neglected in our fast-paced lives.
Paradoxically, we often employ noise to counteract noise. We toggle our devices to drown out silence and, in doing so, miss the symphony that plays around us. As illuminated in “The Sound of Japan,” there is a rich world of sound that awaits our attention. The challenge lies in breaking free from the distractions that continually compete for our focus.
The question then becomes: what melodies may we miss if we overlook the sounds of our surroundings? Are we capable of carving out space for self-reflection in an age riddled with constant noise from media, social interactions, and digital distractions? Perhaps the time has come for us to turn down the volume and explore new realms of silence and introspection. Can we challenge ourselves to run in silence, rediscovering what it truly means to listen?
