Gashau Ayale Sets New Israeli Marathon Record in Seville

Israeli runner Gashau Ayale achieved a remarkable milestone on Sunday morning by setting a new national marathon record at the Seville Marathon. He finished the race in an impressive time of 2:04:53 hours, earning him third place in the prestigious event and securing his spot at the upcoming Paris Olympics. This performance not only showcased Ayale’s immense talent but also elevated his standing as one of Israel’s premier long-distance runners.

Improvement of Previous Record

Ayale’s latest achievement comes just a year after he set the previous national record of 2:05:33 during the same marathon event, where he finished fourth. With a significant improvement of 40 seconds, Ayale demonstrated his incredible progress and commitment to his craft. His consistency in performance has highlighted his potential on the international stage, marking a bright future for Israeli athletics.

Path to the Paris Olympics

This new record secures Ayale’s position in the marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He will join fellow athlete Maru Teferi, who also qualified for the Olympics after winning a silver medal at the World Championships in Budapest. The duo will represent Israel in the marathon, hoping to make a significant impact at the upcoming Olympics.

Competition for Olympic Berth

The race for the third and final Israeli spot in the Olympic marathon is still ongoing. Runners Girma Amara and Aimro Alamia are vying for this coveted position, with Amara holding a personal best of 2:05:52 and Alamia at 2:06:04. The selection for the Paris Olympics will be finalized after the Tokyo Marathon next month, where Alamia will compete while Amara shifts focus to the Lisbon Half Marathon in mid-March.

A Heartfelt Message from Ayale

On achieving this monumental feat, Ayale expressed his excitement, stating, “I am so happy to get the ticket to the Olympic Games, and also with a new Israeli record. There is no one more excited and happy than me.” He emphasized the honor of representing Israel during challenging times for the country and pledged to give his best on the global stage.

Gashau Ayale: A Rising Star

Ayale’s journey in athletics has been nothing short of inspiring. His accolades include a medal in the 2022 Munich European Championships, which came during his first international marathon. Immigrating to Israel from Ethiopia in 2010 with his brothers, Ayale has quickly risen through the ranks, showcasing his potential as a late-blooming talent in sports.

From Soccer to Athletics

Remarkably, Ayale did not begin his athletic career until he was 18 years old. He initially focused on soccer during his time at a boarding school but eventually transitioned to athletics when encouraged by peers. Under the mentorship of notable coaches like Yuval Karmi and Dan Salpeter, Ayale honed his skills and rapidly advanced in long-distance running. His journey has been a testament to dedication and the transformative power of sport.
